I will be moving to Florida this summer and have been invited to attend the Broward Co. job fair this month. I am currently working in Virginia. The problem is that the fair is on a Thursday morning, meaning I have to take Thursday off for sure, but would also like to take Friday off to schedule interviews in another county, and since I have to fly down there I might as well make the most of my time. However, this is also Memorial Day weekend,so I am not so sure how my current principal will react if I take two days off prior to a three day weekend.

Any advice how to pull this one off? My current principal knows I am moving to Florida and these days won't interfere with proctoring state tests (which I have come to think is my true job title here in VA, ha ha). Thanks!

If you have enough I'd take personal leave.

Just take personal leave days. I did this several times this year when I was going to interviews.

Wow, you guys who mention personal leave days are lucky. My district gives teachers one personal day per year. And it can not be carried over to the next school year.

Jesus. We get 8 days off a year. They can be used for illness or personal use.

With one day off per year, it's no wonder teachers are leaving the profession.

We do get 10 sick days, but they absolutely, positively have to be used for sick days. If you are caught lying about using a sick day and you, or an immediate family member (only a child, spouse or parent count) are not sick, it is grounds for immediate termination. Now, I'm not sure if they really have terminated people who are caught but they certainly threaten people into complying.

Doctors notes are required if you are sick three days in a row and can be requested by administration for any absence due to illness (even if you are absent just one day).

Guess we are getting off track from the OP, but we earn 12 days per year, 5 of which can be used for personal leave. My admin has never been very strict about them though. I've been told, "Oh, don't use personal leave for THAT. Use sick. Save your personal leave for something fun!"

I've also known admin to tear up or cross out a leave slip. For example, a teacher leaves sick half way through the day so she turns in a leave slip for a few hours. She comes back to find the slip in her mailbox, torn in half.

The teachers in our district cannot take personal days off around national holidays.

I was thinking the same thing. Ugh.

OP, just make sure it's not in your contract that you can't take days around holidays. Many schools don't allow days off before/after big holidays, like Memorial Day or Christmas.

Since your Principal knows you're moving I'd get with him now, today, and work put a plan for you to take leave. He might have to do some fancy paperwork to make it happen.

Or, he could be a jerk.

My (former) system changed the process a few years ago and took personal leave granting around a holiday away from the building level and kicked it upstairs. You also had to apply for personal leave days in advance.
