I don't know about where you are but calculators, formulae charts and other aids are allowed to be used for the tests administered in the State of Maryland.


Again, current educational theory/practice is discouraging memorization of all sorts of things across the disciplines, not just only in Math.


Teachers who insist on presenting lessons in the methods which are now "discredited" (a word used in a staff meeting) will face disciplinary action up to and including eventual termination if they persist.

No aids are allowed for any state tests in California, including the CAHSEE (CA High School Exit Exam), which was put on hold this year to be realigned with Common Core standards.

I remember that from my own kids' elementary school period in the 1990s. (What a mistake, at least in math, IMO).

The non-calculator sections of our state test have "reasonable" numbers that can be computed without a calculator.
