When I was a kid, newspapers were an important part of education. We subscribed to one at home, and I'm sure that seeing my parents read the newspaper on a daily basis had a big reason for encouraging me to read.

I haven't subscribed to the paper in many years because there are other news options online, and our city newspaper is so fat that it's a bit of a pain to deal with. However, with a youngster entering school, I'm tempted to subscribe and resume reading it.

But, wanted to see what the teacher opinion on that. Are newspapers still important in the education of kids today?

No. Most newspapers no longer comp copies to the local schools. They, and the schools, want the kids to go on-line to access the content. With an on-line subscription of course, which most schools won't pay for.

Hell, my last year my school system didn't buy textbooks because the students supposedly could access the online one. Except the system didn't pay for the access so we were stuck with having only classroom sets of 25 (average class size was 34).

Almost nonexistent. I'm a former journalist and educator, so this is of interest to me.

They were forbidden in my district. State-approved materials only with the ever-present goal of raising test scores.

No

No more current events reports either.

Hmm what article in the news would the students write a report about? Someone's cat video? A new treatment for wrinkles?

Its very rare to see newspapers in any classroom. I have seen teachers use NewsELA, it does have current events articles and they scale to different Lexile levels but that is minimal or non-existent as well.
