Hey you all,

We are nearing the Christmas holiday and next week is our last week then we will be closed for Christmas and New Year.

I have just been hired back to teach PreK in my parent's facility. Over the Thanksgiving break, I came and rearranged the classroom and created the centers. The teacher before me did not allow the children AT ALL to play so I have been allowing them to free play in centers for an hour over the past two weeks in the mornings. I do this because my first day back I noticed that the children lacked problem solving, self- help, and social skills during center play. Since I have been allowing an hour of non instructed play, they are now placing things neat when it is time to clean up, their cubbies are kept neat, and there is less fighting. After free play, I find a Christmas craft to do or we go into circle time and reading. They also are extremely deficient on reading comprehension and interest in books. Now that I read to them, I noticed more and more students are going to the library center during free play. I even have one young learner who always goes into the reading area and asks me what the words are in the books that she decides to read. This shows me that in January I can start on sight words and very early reading with her. Another young learner, enjoys the science center I fixed up and he also enjoys the objects in the manipulative area. He put together a puzzle by himself 2 days ago. To wrap up the day, I read another story and we go into music with movement or phonic awareness.

Yesterday, we did free play, circle time and story. The Christmas activity that we did was put together the classroom Christmas tree and watched Rudolph the Red nose Reindeer. Today we will be doing free play, circle time, and watching A Charlie Browns Christmas.

I do not do any small groups or teacher instructed groups as of yet. My mom told me to start fresh in January. So far I have done diagnostic assessments and will be having parent teacher conference next week.

I wanted to know do you allow yourself and your young learners a break when it is nearing the holiday?
Even though they are learning through play, I feel like I should be implementing teaching practices before it is too late.

Their previous teacher had them since August and some are behind on letter recognition, name writing, and also number sense. Just a few things that they need before kindergarten

We cannot answer that question.

We in this forum are not familiar with Georgia standards for the State of Georgia to pay for the program that you are administering. I don't know whether watching a television show is something that Georgia is willing to pay for, or if Georgia specifies no television time for children in the Georgia Pre-K program in order to receive state funding.

They can look at television but it has to be for a short period of time no more than 30 mins. I am in Florida

I thought you were teaching a program under the GELDS program? Maybe that was the previous school, so you must be near the GA/FL state line?

Again, we do not know the particulars of the program that is funding you. The people providing the funding are the ones that you should look to in order to figure out whether a "free day" or not is permissible.

But you just said you are watching movies. That is a lot longer than half an hour.

Also, there are no free days, if you mean you let them play all day long. That is not part of any Florida curriculum. The children are there to learn something, not watch movies or play.

Are you certified?

Well, they only play for an hour and then we go into circle time or do a craft. I found shorter versions of Christmas movies that are 30 mins and they also go along with what we are learning. FYI we do not watch them everyday. I only put them in when I feel like it will go really well with what we are learning that day.

I am just not doing small groups yet.

I am it certified in pre k in florida

I'm hearing too much about "this child is ahead" and "this child is behind".

What's wrong with that?

That is how we classify for their work sampling system that will follow them to 2nd grade. I usually say high learners and progressive learners

It doesn't sound appropriate that a quality teacher segregates her children into categories of "smart" and "not smart". Four is too young to be judged by the teacher on capabilities.

I'm not a teacher and don't know anything about the "work sampling system" but am a parent and am happy that my child went through Pre-K without a "work sampling system" and getting placed into a group based on skill level.

And, for the record, our daughter attended a child care center operated by one of the nation's premier child care companies.
