Yes, I am in Texas. And this is definitely something one would want to consider. Research before you move, OP!

Particularly with the shakiness of some state retirement systems.

One could end up with NO retirement income.

Thank you all for your excellent advice. It has really helped me sharpen my plan. I have tweeked my strategy a bit:

1) I won't get a M. ed. (Just takes too long and still might need to jump through more hoops)

2) I will get the Teach-away (District of Columbia) Certification. (I know this won't automatically allow me to teach, except in D.C., but it will look nice on my resume. It will get me more interviews at places/locations I am interested in.

3) as one poster mentioned, I will take some Praxis exams available in Shanghai (though the Teach-away cert might already do this so I will wait for more clarity on this).

4) By Next School year I will start to apply to schools in the USA and Europe. I will wait until a great offer is available. If I need to jump through more hoops, I am willing to do this for the right school. But I won't start at a bad school just because I need to "pay my dues". I know the law of averages is on my side.

I am making good money (60k) here and saving lots of money. My motivation is to get out of China but I won't hurry and risk blowing through my savings. When the right offer comes I will leave.

I'm going to add one thought.

One of the primary ways that teachers get recertified (in most states I think it's every 5 years) is taking more courses...usually 2 per 5 year period. Get a Masters Degree means a little more than scattered courses, and in the long run is not likely very much more work.
