Sales tax in Tennessee is high because there is no income tax and property tax is low.

Taxes must be collected somewhere, somehow. A consumption tax is MUCH more fair than a property or income tax. Smarter, too, in many ways.

But it does bite hard with certain high-cost items.

If you spent $6,000 on a car repair, though, then maybe you should have had the work don in Virginia or somewhere else.

I paid federal income taxes (and ALOT out of my check every week ). No state income tax is a pittance anyway.

This is not good.

I don't agree with the consumption vs. property tax, but whatever.

Sunny, what did you have done that cost that much? My dad has a Mercedes and I know that even an oil change is ridiculous, but still!

Its an SUV I bought from a shyster in Kingsport/stbx picked it out-- the engine connecting rods and bearings were screwed up when I bought the thing- now I am stuck-

I refuse to buy a new car as I had a bad experience there too. This truly stinks.

I notice you list NY and Florida as areas you live too. What would you have paid in those two areas? I know NY sales tax is high (and I assume it applies to auto repairs as well, but I don't know). Florida is considerably less than Tennessee, but it's still a heafty rate.

I know it's a shock to get hit with an exta $600 (and I wouldn't like it either), but what would you have paid in NY or Florida? $400? $500? So it maybe cost you $200 more in Tennessee? And here you don't paid a 5 or 6% state income tax. For me a 5 or 6% state income tax would not be a pittance.

Sales tax on big-ticket or expensive items aren't a joy to pay here, but overall, I'd rather pay state taxes here than in a lot of other places.

EVERYONE pays federal income tax. That is a non sequitur to this discussion.

State tax is a pittance some place and not others. I pay $1500-$1600 a year here in Arizona for state income tax. Sales tax is 8.05% - 1.45% less than your state. To equate the two, you would have to be taxed on $110,345 in a year to save the "pittance" of $1600 in state income tax here over what we pay in sales tax.

Maybe Sunny just needs to vent a bit (like we all do at times). She got screwed on the vehicle, then had to have a big repair done; and then to add insult to injury, get hits with a big tax bill to go with it.

Sometimes, it's just like that. Get mad . . . but don't stay mad.

Not very Santa/Pastor-like.

Sunny. I think the real problem here is the price of that repair. Husband should be home soon. I'm going to ask him about this.

Here he is!

He says you can get a complete engine for $2,000 to $3,000!!!!!!!!!

Don't do that repair!!!!
