Hi there... Just thought I would give you my opinion... In all honesty, I like Tennessee compared to some other states i've lived in, it's a good place to live for the most part. But, it is the most gay unfriendly place I have ever lived. Most of the gay people here are so closeted it's not even funny, but only because they have no other alternative. Just Google gay hate crimes in Tennessee, that should tell you everything you need to know. If that is important to you, you seriously might want to just check into the other alternative places to move. Tennessee is truly decades behind other states in acceptance and tolerance.

HTH!

TN is more a conservative state and definately not CA but although the Cookeville area is not a openly "look at me Im gay" area I wouldnt say it is gay unfriendly. You will find that lifestyle more acceptable in the larger cities and towns. Smaller towns tend to be more behind the times. Good luck with decision.

You'll have far less problems in one of the big 4 cities, and although I know nothing specifically of it, Johnson City apparently has a vibrant gay scene or whathaveyou.

A lot of the answers you seek would vary depending on where you're looking at. I think all larger cities would be fine, as well as some of the smaller cities- opinions vary greatly across this state and some small town USA places might just suprise you :0)

Um....I'm gay and I live in Nashville. There's quite a large gay population here. Like others have said...it totally depends on where you live. Bigger cities are going to be more diverse and accepting. Overall, I think most Tennesseans are polite and aren't going to harass you. I've never had anyone say anything derogatory about me to my face (who knows...maybe behind my back, but I don't think so ). But...if you want to be around large groups of other people "like yourself", then you will have to live in one of the bigger cities. Let me know if you have any questions about Nashville.

Good Luck with your research

I have more gay friends in Knoxville than I did in small-town Massachusetts.

NJ is probably the most gay friendly state of the three, imo.

Tennessee is a very Republican/Conservative state.

If you flaunt your sexuality and make a point to let it be known you are asking to get your feelings hurt.

If you keep it to yourself and don't bring up political arguments about homosexuality (gay marriage, gay adoption etc) you will be fine.

If you expect the Conservative religious folks to accept you - you will be let down.

I personally only know 3 gay people and 2 of them (1 being my cousin) have been assaulted because of arguing about gay marriage with a biker in Lynchburg.

This is all in the Moore,Franklin,Lincoln county area I'm speaking of (the counties I've lived in).

EDIT: I just realized that your a lesbian......Tennessee is a definite no-no in that case.
