Done and done.

I kinda sorta accidentally got a reputation. I only have one neighbor that can even see my place. Just prior to moving in I had my head shaved bald as some kind of student incentive thing (I was a principal at the time).
The day we moved, I was wearing old military camouflage pants because they are comfortable work pants, and a t-shirt. I also have guns. The neighbors came by to meet us when I was carrying guns in the house. Good timing.

White guy. Goatee. Shaved head. Camo pants. Guns.

We've had no problems here.

I couldn't stop laughing after reading that! I can just imagine the impression you made.

No problems here either. Since we've been habituated to locking up we usually do, but accidentally have left open doors or windows on several occasions with no ill effects. I feel quite safe but understand that no place is perfectly safe any longer between urban/suburban gangs, poverty and criminal mobility, as well as rural issues with Meth and Oxycontin.

I LOVE it!

We have a dog, an alarm and are more than prepared if anything were to happen. We feel very safe but if someone is going to come in they are going to come in. Most people aren't stupid. They know most people have guns. This is not like Massachusetts where I grew up. The day I can't sleep with the window open is a really sad day. And we go out with the windows open all the time. Of course, you will have to deal with him if you want to come in.

btw--- 'helicopters' in ORLANDO ? hmmm, perhaps you lived in the wrong side of town while in Orlando ? I lived in Lake Mary, then Heathrow area, which by most measures in a nice part of the town, so you must have lived close to the ghetto or the "hood" you described to hear/see SPOTLIGHTS ?? that's something I never experienced in greater Orlando, and don't experience it now, and I still have interests there
It is closer for me to get to Ohio than it is to Memphis. I live in the opposite end of the state. Heathrow and Lake Mary are about 20 miles from downtown Orlando. I no longer have interests in Orlando and I am quite happy with that situation.

Just a crazy little story here. I lived in a 'transitional' (going downhill) n'hood in Memphis, always kept my doors and windows locked. Locked myself out one day and DS tells me not to worry he can get in, easy. Turns out the lock on the back door was broken and simply lifting the door up from the frame would pop the door open. Apparently it had been that way for years, and several of the neighborhood kids knew about it.
OTOH several other houses on the street were broken into. Very Random.

Forgot to add- I have four house dogs (in addition to the cats) and if entering my home via a window you'd:
be licked unmercilessly by the biggest one, the blue heeler, since she'd be the only one tall enough to get to you (actually, that's for me and what she did when I had to break in last week. Strangers she'd probably chew their darned faces off)
trip over the younger Corgi and fall on the older one- she likes to play dead. A lot.
give Tater a heart attack as he cowers on the floor

Scary barks, tho'- that's for sure.

That is really, really funny, especially the dog that plays dead. If their barking didn't scare them they will be too busy laughing at their antics to steal anything.

I wonder what else everyone does. Do you all leave your doors open during the day? For instance, my husband and kid just left to go pick up pizzas. I'm sitting here with two doors wide open. Would you all lock the doors? Do you keep them locked during the day?

I'm in Bone Cave in Van Buren county and we never lock doors and the windows stay open 24/7, weather permitting. I love where we are. Very safe and the neighbors are friendly without being openly nosey. I'd guess a lot of the smaller 'communities' in this area are like that. Once you're settled in and know the neighbors and the area people watch out for each other.

Ok, now I'm kinda bummed. Maybe we don't have problems cuz everyone watches out for everyone else. Maybe it's not cuz there's no crime here. Maybe it's cuz they know we are retired law enforcement and have made no secret of the fact that there's a gun hidden in every room and we all (daughter included) sleep with a loaded gun on the night stand. Or maybe they're afraid of the 20 some dogs in the house............

Nah, don't be bummed! You and your guns are probably not any different than most of your neighbors. Some might argue there's no crime because of that fact. Others might say it's because everyone does look out for everyone else or it's because of your dogs.

I figure it's a combination of all of the above.
