Gov. Bill Haslam announced Tuesday he has placed some of his private business investments in a blind trust.

The major exceptions are his undisclosed share of the family-owned Pilot Corp. chain of truck stops and a real estate holding outside Tennessee.

I have heard some people grill the Governor for doing this in conjuction with his repeal of the previous administration's order forcing executive branch employees to declare where they receive income from and the amount as well. (Haslam's order says they only have to declare where its from, not the amount.) But I really don't think the blind trust is an issue at all. In fact, it is entirely appropriate. Blind trusts prevent the beneficiary (in this case, the Governor) from influencing trading in the trust. It basically gives an independant third party complete authority over the trust. A good way to protect the Governor from claims of inside trading or other allegations.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bredesen had one as well.

Now, the issue of him not declaring how much income is received from outside sources is a seperate matter entirely...
