If you do get a job in police work, and eventually rise in management, I hope you will fight against the police being used to make money by local government handing out massive speeding fines to people who work insane hours, and get little pay and no benefits in the private sector.

Go away. Thanks.

Police officers don't get anything in return for writing a bunch of tickets. I could write 1 or 100, and I get the same coin. If you got a ticket, it's probably because you deserved it. If you don't like it, there are more than enough cop-bashing websites you can join. Don't bring that trash here.

YES! Good for you! Bless you for keeping us all safe. I wish everyone would take the time to say "thank you" to every cop, firefighter, teacher and armed services personnel that they see every darn day. They sure don't do it for the money. They are truly the selfless among us. THANK YOU!

Amen Brother. I have written tons of tickets and STILL have not won the toaster oven for my DW

I have mellowed in my old age and I now give drivers the option of "the lecture" or the ticket. I don't think anyone should have to get both. You would be suprised how many say 'just give me the ticket'.

That goes double for you. An officer with a sense of humor. Exactly what this world needs.

Lee County, Florida use to have the guys and gals win games of golf and hunting trips. That is, until the public got wind of it. They are not the norm, though. They've frequently been in the national news for assorted hijinks. A pox on the profession. Fortunately, the majority of departments don't even come close to that debauchery.

For the rest of you, slow the heck down. I have children on the roads. Anyone thinking that law enforcement is here to put a crimp in your life has very strange thinking, in my opinion. My family was in law enforcement and I was raised on Wambaugh.

For allowing me to impart this blarney I leave you with pertinent information.

Best of luck.

Help me ignore those who scorn

And show me no respect,

But be mindful of all citizens

I've sworn to protect.

Thumbs up thanks for all the suggestions

I appreciate all the replies I been getting. I have tried knoxville and got a rejection letter my 2nd week in academy, lol. I applied in Apr 2010 with the knox co sheriff dept but nothing has happened. I am scheduled to test with Gatlinburg, Nashville, Kingsport, & Jackson. Chattanooga isnt currently accepting apps but they will email when they do. I applied with Clarksville & hoping to hear from them soon. Of course I have applied in my home county of Greene too. Keep the suggestions coming thou.

You should apply to the Hamilton County Sheriffs Dept also. They are a FINE department to work for. I don't believe they are "hiring" but they do take applications. They have had their bad days in the "spotlight" for the department head in the past, but he was no reflection of the actual officers and admin who work there. The new Sheriff is really up on constant training and certifications. Not bad, that's just more to add to your resume should you ever leave
Chattanooga is growing, not only with Amazon and VW, but with the annexations into the city which have been taking place. If you can stay out of the politics with the Mayor, then you will do fine there. Nice brotherhood. I heard Bradley County keeps weeding out it's officers, so you should apply there also, they are in a need of good, ethical officers.

Unemployment rate in Chattanooga as of Jan 2011 is 9.1 Vs. Knoxville at 8.2. We are about 10,000 people behind Knoxville as population goes. We do have VW still hiring about 1,200 more in the next 2 yrs, plus Amazon will be hiring about 600 this year. I would say we will hover around 6-7 % unemployment by the years end. Wacker is beginning its hiring and training. They just donated about 3 million to Chatt State for the classroom training. Wacker is in Cleveland, but i would guess alot of hires will be from the Chattanooga area.

I think a more accurate statement is Knox County's January unemployment rate is 7.5 as opposed to Hamilton County's 8.7. It's a darn good thing Chattanooga got VW or they would be much worse off. Knox has stayed ahead of the largest metro areas throughout the recession. It's the reason we ended up in Knoxville as opposed to Chattanooga. Jobs.

But heck, it looks like he can't get hired in my area so this info is probably not going to help him. I wonder why, though. Our area is always hiring. Maybe it will help the next person.

I think I saw where Athens TN was advertising for a police officer the other day. Good luck to you.
