I hope to move to Oak Ridge when I retire at the end of next year so "new jobs" is not a factor in my reloaction decision but I have been reading The Oak Ridge Observer (a weekly newspaper) to keep up with stories about town happenings and new housing coming to the city. While I was doing so I came across a story titled "City Leader Lays Out Growth Vision" on Page 3 of the August 10 edition.

Laura, I have heard a lot of the same from local government here ( Tri-Cities) about Oak Ridge. There is a definite trend to growth in Oak Ridge. A lot of small business here are looking toward Oak Ridge companies for contracts also. It has been about 5 years since I have been in Oak Ridge its self, I have driven by it, but as for down town it has been a while. It seemed then that the area was booming. There is a lot of diversity and community activity going on. I think they, as a town, are really advertising it a lot due to the fact that the name Oak Ridge and Nuclear are synonymous and people are afraid of that word. But if you really look into nuclear power as far as energy and such goes, it is the best way to go, I think. But again, that is just my opinion.

The one current minus about Oak Ridge is enough upscale rental apartments so they have a lot of people commuting to work (and play) in Oak Ridge from Farragut and West Knoxville, right now. They are currently building two such apartment complexes. Since I want to rent in retirement, I'm following this housing development closely because I really want to live, take classes, volunteer and play in the town I live in. It's the right size town for me. And, I'm a 34-year federal government employee in a research department (who likes to fish). I think Oak Ridge has a lot of my kind of people. I can see it in the activities of the town and in the type of course offerings for retirees that a lot of government people, government contractors, researchers who work in the Oak Ridge area, probably remain there after retirement. I'll be visiting in less than 2 months.
I only wish I could permanently get there, sooner but I have to wait until the end of 2007 when I'll be ready. I'm jealous of the people who are posting to this forum and ready to pull up stakes and head for their best spot in Eastern TN, now.
