Hi, I'm a young guy in my early twenties with two kids under the age of 3 and i live in Michigan. I'm thinking and looking into moving to Tennessee but I want to make sure I can afford it. I work at Walmart right now but am going to go to college for a mechanic. I'm trying to find either a mobile home or a home to rent on its own property (not in a park). How is the cost of rent, gas, the community, job opportunities, etc. there? Any advice and help is much appreciated. Thank you.

I can't be as helpful as a current Tennessee resident because I don't live there yet, but I'd like to suggest that you begin by looking at the ads in the on-line versions of newspapers in Tennessee. If anyone is advertising a home for rent, you will likely find it listed in the ads. You should also be able to see help wanted ads in the on-line newspapers. Useful information about almost every city or town is available to you through City-Data.com at the link below.

I hope that helps.

Heard about this on the radio the other day. Haven't really looked at it yet so don't know how helpful it might be, but maybe it's a place to start. TNHousingSearch.org - Socialserve.com

TN is a big state and there is a lot of variation from one end to another. Unemployment in Memphis was 9.9% as of March, while in Knoxville it was 7.5%

And just to give you a very general idea of the cost of things in TN you can play with this nifty little COL comparison calculator. It can give you an approximate idea of the cost of things like milk, eggs and bread Cost of Living comparison calculator

Dont do it! You dont want to live here! We talk funny. We fry all of our food. Your lungs wont be able to handle the fresh air. We are expected to say things like "yes maam" and "yes sir" all the time. We spank our kids and make them go to church! The Church of WallyWorld! We have no indoor plumbing and there are houndogs under our porches! Dont do it man! For the sake of everything Holy [Pabst Blue Ribbon and NASCAR] dont do it!
