Yep, And Chunky Apple Spice Muffins, Cranberry Apple Orange Sauce. And I make the meanest Christmas Fruit Cake.

We had White beans and Ham soup tonight. I put bits of carrots and tiny chopped onions. Then core out a round loaf of sour dough bread and fill it with the soup. Then top with melted Munster cheese.

Oh cut it out! That sounds divine!

We need to put all this on the recipe thread. I wonder if MBMOUSE could do it? It's cold and I'm in the mood to cook!

Default Turkey Chili

Here's one for after Thanksgiving. It comes from that Everyday Foods cooking show on PBS. If I were making it, I'd cut it down and modify it a bit.

Turkey Chili

4 strips bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
3 pounds ground dark-meat (7% fat) turkey
4 cups chopped onions
1/4 cup minced garlic clove
2 medium fresh jalapeño chiles (ribs and seeds removed for less heat, if desired), minced
3 tablespoons chili powder
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
4 teaspoons ground cumin
2 cans (28 ounces each) whole tomatoes in purée
2 tablespoons unsulfured molasses
Coarse Salt
3 cans (15.5 ounces each) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
Assorted toppings, such as cheddar cheese, pickled sliced jalapeño chiles, reduced-fat sour cream, and fresh cilantro leaves

1. Heat a Dutch-oven (or other heavy 5-quart pot) over medium heat. Add bacon; cook until crisp brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Raise heat to high; add turkey. Cook, stirring and breaking up meat with a spoon, until no longer pink, 8 to 10 minutes.
2. Add onion, garlic, and jalapeno; cook until soft, stirring often, about 5 minutes. Stir in chili powder, cocoa powder, and cumin; cook, stirring, until fragrant, 1 minute.
3. Break up tomatoes with a spoon or your hands, and stir them in along with the puree. Add molasses, 1 cup water, and 4 teaspoons salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer; cook, partially covered, 30 minutes.
4. Add beans; continue cooking, uncovered, until meat and beans are very tender, and chili is thick, about 30 minutes more. Serve with toppings.

Is there ANYTHING that can't be sold on eBay. I think I could sell my cat's poop . . . put a gold band around it and call it a novelty cigar. "Makes a great gag gift!"

I loved reading this thread.

With a few years left to go before we join y'all, I've been reading up on southern cooking and really am enjoying this cookbook: "Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes, and Honest Fried Chicken" by Ronni Lundy. It's full of what sound to me, to be true southern recipes as well as commentary from old-time country and bluegrass musicians on their favorite dishes, and anecdotes that make me feel like I'm right there.

Most of the recipes are from the mothers and grandmothers of these musicians, as well as relatives of the writer. The book is a pleasure to read (I'm carrying it with me to actually read the recipes; they're so interesting, with little tidbits of lifestyle stories injected in the actual recipes as though she were showing me in person and telling the story that goes with each step!)

I have made the "honest fried chicken" and can't believe it's actually made with just a dusting of flour. It's a mystery to me where that crispy coating comes from, if not from some batter, shake-n-bake, or any other ingredient! But apparently that's how it's done. Who'da thunk?

And boy was it great--especially with hush puppies alongside and milk gravy on top of it all!
