I've lived in Chattanooga my whole life, I have yet (knock on wood) to be a victim of any type of crime, and I don't live in the "protected" areas, lol.

The crime here in town is usually in just a few certain areas, and they are mostly taking themselves out, so I am fine with that. The few instances of late that are happening downtown have been proven to be outright lies, or groups that have strayed to where the people are and are caught quickly.
I am not out at 3 in the morning, but I feel safe.
Be sure to spend a day or two here in Chattanooga, you will fall in love

FYI, the soddy-daisy area would be perfect for you, and with the prices you can get houses right now with a little fix up, you wouldn't lose. You can be downtown for the weekend nightlife from any area around chattanooga including soddy, hixson, harrison. Plus, all of those have there own little bars.

I have enjoyed reading this post as I and my husband plan to move next year (when I retire) to Chattanooga, TN and we were wondering about life there. I live 60 miles out of Washington, DC and work in DC. My nearest store is 20 miles from my home so I am tired of all the traffic, rush hour, etc. In my development there are no sidewalks so I can't walk. I want to move somewhere where I can walk, walk to a store, etc. I don't need the fast pace anymore, retiring and now I want to smell the roses. We plan to sell our home, and I just want to rent a nice rambler and walk. Thank you for the informative information. De

As someone hoping to move, there's one other thing I'd suggest-pull financial reports for the various cities and counties you might be considering, unless Chattanooga is the only city you have in mind. Even then, you might want to do so. You can draw your own conclusions about the financial future and taxation in Chattanooga yourself.
