Tennesse's Healthiest Counties for 2011 (Jackson, Franklin: transplants, university, pharmacy)

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute ranked the health of each county in the country. Included in the methodology are things such as smoking rates, cancer rates, mortality rates, obesity rates, access to medical care, quality of medical care, education levels, poverty rates, and environmental quality.

Here's how Tennessee's 95 counties stack up:

Looking at the relative rankings, there does seem to be a correlation between higher growth suburban counties and cities (and ones with lots of transplants) compared to some of the smaller more rural counties. That doesn't speak well of native Tennesseans, really.


Very interesting that Moore County (Lynchburg) is so high. Guess the whiskey cleans out your system.

High growth suburban counties and cities tend to have more access to higher quality health care, a higher education level and lower poverty rates. All factors considered in calculating the score. They also tend to have younger populations which would rank better in many of the other categories. It's more of a comparison of how easy it would be to maintain good health in a given area than an actual comparison of how healthy residents of equal age are today.

That said I'm shocked my county scored as high as it did considering we have no hospital, no 24 hour medical care other than an ambulance to another county, the only dental is through the county health department, no optometrist, a part-time pharmacy, low educational attainment, high poverty, an aging population.... and still we get a 30.

Davidson is quite impressive for an urban county.
