The percentage of Tennesseans without health insurance grew more than twice the national average over the past seven years, with 809,000 in the state uninsured in 2006, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday.

The rising number of uninsured people spurs the ongoing debate about whether it makes more sense financially to pay for health-care costs on the front or tail end.

Aside from my time in the military, I've been without health insurance most of my adulthood. It's been my choice though. I'm young and healthy and just didn't want to pay into something I probably wouldn't use.

I don't profess to be an expert on it, but I don't think I would support a comprehensive federal healthcare system in the US, similar to those in Canada. I think they can't handle basic things, so I don't want my tax dollars going to a program that is assured to be riddled with fraud and incompetence.
