Are these just Tennessee critters or are they elsewhere with different names?
They make up the summer settings of my memories. My daughter missed the sounds so much when she was in Texas!

Lightning bugs are all over AFAIK. Here in Wi and at our TN place and in TX for sure.

Same goes for June bugs, I hate when they get stuck in my hair at night when I walk past a light where they are attracted to. My barn cats find them delictable ...... heehee

Jar flies are Cicadas aka 17 year locusts. Called jar flies because of , being so big ,the way they jarred your hand if you held them by their wings.

Thanks for the information siennaoconnor. That explains why I never heard of them. We don't have cicadas, as such, up here.

I'm surprised if you have them in NY that we don't have them just a little further north in NH. But if we did, I'd know it, it sounds like.

This year, the cicadas are incredible, although I thought they said they would peak in May of 2008.

Anyway, during the Boomsday Festival, with 300,000 people in attendance, they seemed determined to be the loudest, and they were successful.

Crickets may chirp a lot, but they are (or one is) great to have in your house or basement. They loooove spiders!
