LOL! A couple of weeks ago, One of my elderly neighbor ladies killed a snake in her bathroom. She beat it to death with a toilet brush!!! It was the only means she had at hand to dispatch it!!!

Default water + tall grass = snakes in TN

That's what I've been told, anyway, so I try and steer clear of grassy banks and shorelines. Haven't seen one yet, and we spend a lot of time hiking, fishing, etc. Did find a snakeskin last weekend, though, does that count? LOL! On a golf course!!

I agree with previous posters, the more rural you are the more likely you are to have snake-neighbors. In the burbs/urban areas, not so much.

Good luck!

Greetings,

I moved to Tennessee from North Florida approximately two weeks ago and had more snakes in Florida. However, I have killed two Timber Rattlers since I have been here. What works great for us is the cats. They play amoung the grass and rocks (live in the mountains) and brings the snakes right out. Then I get to have target practice (just hope I don't accidently shoot the cat). I have a friend who actually skins them and eats the snakes.
Regards,
Bubba

late post- but in Clearwater Florida a timber rattler was hiding in a load of stone crab traps brought from the crabber's rural dairy ranch to be placed in the gulf .
A nothern tourist sitting on the hotel seawall next to the fish house saw it slither out of a trap as it was hand loaded on the boat and decided to pick it up with a kayak paddle and leans it over the rail towards us and ask what kind of snakes do they have on the beach .
I convinced him we nave no poisionous snakes on this over popullated three mile barrier island. So after he released it in some shrubs within feet of where he was siting outside his room, I hollored at the deckhand loading the traps to watchout for rattle snakes and the tourist ran inside and checked out of the hotel . So beware poisonous snakes can be anywhere .
In Fl, we are told by native Crakers not to stick your hands where you cannot see them for fear of snakes or spiders.
On the swaunee river moccasins and non poisonous water snakes hang in lower limbs of tress. they are said to be of poor site but hunt by smell . An oldtimer i know ,who grew up on the river, tells tales of snakes that mistakenly jump into the odorous bait buckets of slow moving boats only to have the fisherman shoot holes in his boat trying to rid himself of the fish hunting snake.
Wild boar are what scare me the most on in florida .

Tennessee has 32 snake species. 4 are venomous. The pygmy rattlesnake and the cotton mouth are found almost exclusively in the western half of the state. The timber rattlesnake and copperhead can be found most anywhere in the state.

From all I've read, Tennessee is fairly low on its snake population considering the states temperate climate. My wife is totally frightened by the thought of any snakes at all, so I did my research on it for her a couple of days ago to help her feel good about our move. Definitely safer from snakes there than in Texas!

Most snakes are very skiddish and only want to get away from you. They only bite when either surprised or they feel they are being threatened. Even at that, venemous snakes rarely waste their venom in defense. There are only a few people that die each year in the US from snakebites out of 8000-10,000 bites anually. Its estimated that around 3,000 of the bites reported annually are due to people messing with the snake, chasing them, handling them, etc.
