Hi folks - I live in TN but I am looking for a special location...

Where do all the creative types of kindred spirits amidst the nascar, barbecue, titan population find a good support network?

Any small cities with colleges strong in the liberal arts and a good writers network?

I assume nashville with vandy would be a candidate but I simply cannot live in a city with that kind of traffic and high house prices....

I am looking for someplace a little less traveled. And if it doesn't have a strong writers group, it should be so gorgeous (Walden Pond) it would inspire the scribe in an illiterate!

Carmel california was originally started as an artist's colony..

Other examples...woodstock ny, bennington vermont, asheville nc, etc..

I love TN...just looking for a user friendly place for writers...

Thanks!

Try Sewanee. Small, liberal (and I do mean liberal) arts college set in a beautiful gothic campus perched on top of a mountain.

Or, for a change of pace, Rhodes College in Memphis. It's also a small, liberal (very liberal) arts college in the middle of a beautiful, wooded, old area of Memphis with very little traffic and cool, hip inner-city neighborhoods.

I read up on Sewanee - it sounded like it was only a summer arts colony - that and the fact that it was pricey - do most folks live there year round?
I was shocked to see the house prices on land that is leased...it sounded great, looked beautiful -will plan a trip there...do you knwo if it has a theater group or a witers group? thanks! 12b

Knoxville has a writer's guild that seems to be pretty active. I haven't been to any of there meetings but have heard a lot about them.

There is a strong local actors coop that I think does original plays, too, at the Black Box Theater. Good shows.
Actors Co-Op : Cooperative Theater Since 1995
Asheville, N.C., immediately comes to mind as arty and beaultiful.
May also like LaGrange, GA, home of LaGrange College. A very good liberal arts college. It's a pretty place on the Chattahoochee River, not expensive and close to Atlanta when you need city stuff.

Asheville NC and Black Mountain is the place to check out. Artists, musicians, writers, you name it. Athens Ga is prety good as well. Like JMT said Sewanee has a strong local writers scene. In my opinion the Knoxville Writers Guild is more like a free therapy meeting than anything remotely close to a creative exchange of ideas. Also take a look at every town from San Fransisco north to Vancouver. There are many small towns that are very reasonable and almost everyone in town will be there for the same reason as you.

Good luck

Asheville, NC, Sewanee, TN, Mendocino, CA, or several communities in Vermont or upstate NY.

Didn't know Mendocino was one- that's where they shot Murder She Wrote...
Bennington Vermont is good...not sure where upstate NY? Woodstock is considered good, New Paltz maybe? I hate those taxes in NYS!

Santa Barbara has an amazing creative community. Lots of famous writers, including Sue Grafton, Fannie Flagg and numerous screenwriters, live and write there. Writer's groups are plentiful, and they even specialize by genre. The annual Santa Barbara Writer's Conference (SBWC) is one of the best (and biggest) in the country.

I think Santa Barbara is as good as it gets, but it costs so much to live there. You might want to check into the SBWC. It's held in mid-June and they fill up in the spring. I think it's worth every penny, and you'll meet lots of other writers from all backgrounds and locales. Happy writing!
