I was shocked learn that corporal punishment (paddling, etc.) is still legal in public schools. Coming from the North East, this is not something that I am familiar with. I was looking for some thoughts and experiences from people who currently have children in public schools on this topic. Thank you in advance!

Do you have children in the school system here and did they get paddled?

It's not all counties by any means. Knox County doesn't allow it and they are not alone.

It is legal in many school districts (as it should be), but in practice I do not think it is used often if ever anymore. Everyone is scared of a lawsuit.

As far as I know, most schools have to have parental permission in order to beat their kids.

As jc said...most everyone is afraid of lawsuits, which is why a lot of schools resemble zoos these days.

I went to school in east TN (Sullivan county) back in the late 70s/early 80s and it was acceptable then. They didnt even have to call your parents. Not sure the rules there now.

I was in public schools in Greene County 1993-2006 and I never saw or heard of anyone being punished using beating. Call the school or central office of the system you're looking at and inquire. It may be a by-parental-permission only thing, but I doubt many schools do that nowadays.

In Cumberland County at the beginning of each school year you get a packet of papers to sign. One of these is whether or not you allow corporal punishment for your child. You can put in yes or no.

In High School my son was having some "difficulties" he got into some trouble and he called me up to see if he could get suspended for 3 days or get a paddling (which he didn't want). He had already missed his alloted 5 days so I gave permission for him to get paddled. He was very good for the rest of the year.

They still have it at Pigeon Forge High School. But they have to get the parent's permission and I heard a rumor that the parent has to be present there at the time of paddling. I am all for it. The kids at school NOW are an embarrassment and need to be paddled. They do not mind the teachers or anything and if promoting paddling, this could calm them down some. I know growing up if a student got paddled over something we all straighten up and didn't do it again. Now all they will do is suspend you- what good will that do? They don't want to go to school anyways! Paddling is not beating and I am against people who think it is. I was paddled by my parents and I swear I never did whatever it was I got whooped for again. Same when I was in school. It did me good and I learned from it.

It's obvious that what these kids really need is a time out.
