We live in Maryland and can't wait to move out of this overtaxed expensive state. Looking to move within the next 2 years when we can retire. Have been researching TN and other states and really like TN.

Looking for a nice quiet area for our greyhounds, cats and goats to live with some land. Don't care about schools, we have no children. Any areas that might have farms for sale or some acres.

Not looking living in a city but in the country not to far from stores but not in cookie cutter homes areas or homes that are so close to each other.

How is the crime rate for TN? It's got to be better then where we live near Baltimore.

Looking at the pics of TN and it looks beautiful. Thanks for any info.

Crime rate is far better than near Baltimore unless you are talking Memphis. That's in West Tennessee, though, not a very popular area for transplants. Most go to Middle or East Tenn. It's a big state and a lot to explore. I'm a transplant, live in Knoxville, and love it here. You might want to take a trip down and check out Middle and East Tenn.

That's just stupid hik. Look at Baltimore and Memphis, the population size and the number of murders. Your dislike of Memphis is well noted, just state the facts please, if you can.

The cities of Memphis and Baltimore (not the metro areas) are similar in size and have similar crime stats. All of that information is available here at city-data, in addition for every town, city, and county in America.

For Memphis:

For Baltimore:

The State of Tennessee has identified various communities around the state that have passed certain criteria to be considered ideal retirement communities. Here's its web site:

Retire Tennessee

Three of those communities have also been certified as ideal retirement areas by the American Association of Retirement Communities: Chattanooga, Cookeville, and Crossville.

OK. Lets use City Data's data. 2010 Memphis Population is 646,000 or so, and murders are 89. Baltimore is 623,000 and 223 murders. Quite a difference. Now if you use the total figure, we are up, the big difference is the violent crimes, specifically assaults, which could be petty theft and they happen in isolated areas. Again and only 20% of all US cities use this, but Memphis reports are UCR, which raises the stats. If any other city in TN uses it or if Baltimore even uses it, I would love to know.

There are several areas from all over the state. Tri City area is nice, and is not as hot as the rest of the state, which would be a bit closer to what your used to. Beautiful too.

Thanks all. Regarding murders in baltimore it is closer to 400+ My sister is a parametic in the city and if some dies on the strret they count it as a murder but if they die in the hospital they do not count it a homicide. They play the numbers.
How bout the Sparta TN area. My sister got her german sheppard from a breeder there.

We move in 4 weeks. In the area where we bought our home, we have already made friends with many transplants - one from Ct, a couple from Chicago area, and another couple from Michigan. There's plenty land where we are going, stores aren't around the corner, but they are close enough. It's quiet and low crime. We've already been contacted by our neighbors (and I didn't think we had any!) and have 2 people keeping an eye on the house and the construction of the pool. I've been watching the weather for the last 2 years (since we bought) and comparing side by side on weather.com. It seems with just a few days exceptions to be almost the same weather we've had here in NYC. We're near the "horrible, scary city" of Memphis, actually an hour away in McNairy county.

Nope, don't live there yet, but I did live east of Knoxville for almost 2 years. It's a nice state for retirement. Just gonna take you a while to get used to s-l-o-w. Took us over 8 months to get a quote and contract to build our deck and pool; but all should be completed by move-in.

The Tri-Cities climate is more comfortable than Baltimore's about 90% of the time.

Sparta is a nice little town in a beautiful area. It's adjacent to Cookeville, so you should post this question in the Cookeville forum to get more responses.
