I'm not saying that it's a huge problem, just that it happens sometimes. If I remember correctly, most of the cases I heard about were in West Tennessee (in and around Dyersburg and Memphis), with a few scattered around the Tri-Cities region in the northeast.

I guess what I'm saying is, gang members do infiltrate smaller towns sometimes. I can't think of many besides Dyersburg where they've gained a foothold, but every now and then you will have a thug set up shop.

The 800 LB gorilla in the room here is this; The reason why traditionally big city gangs have great difficulty gaining a foothold in more rural and smaller metro areas of TN is a direct result of that racism.

Minorities whether they are law abiding or not are very much scrutinized and watched in white rural areas in many parts of the country.

When visiting family in Bristol and Johnson City I can see this practiced every day I'm there.

I'm not advocating profiling nor am I promoting racism, I'm just offering a very plausible explanation as to why groups of minorities cannot successfully group in these areas.

Im sure it does occur. I was just going by my area and would'nt associated meth with gangs here. We have had some incidence of graffiti with m13, but it was merely adolescent want to be stuff according to law enforcement.

No gorilla, Julian.

In white rural areas everyone is "watched" as you put it. I grew up in a very small town - very white - in the Northeast. No one is watched, really, but everyone knows what everyone else is doing, and then some.

There is nothing good, no silver lining, regarding racism. Ever.

That's an understatement. There may not be any "gangs" but Cocke County can be as scary as some of the worst inner cities. And what is even more frightening is traditionally people in power in that area are in on it.

It's been known as a hotbed of corruption for decades. Here's a pretty thorough history:
