Pizza in Jackson area (Memphis, Germantown: buying, college, restaurants)

I know I am somewhat of a pizza snob but even my husband who is pretty flexible agrees: there ain't no such thing as pizza in this neck of the woods. There's some red stuff sparingly placed on bread dough with even more stingy application of cheese on top, then baked in a slow oven so the dough rises to a fluffy, soft, mass of bread.

OR, there's chain stores that make an amorphous pretend to be like somewhere else blobs of dough or crispy cracker crust!

So, if anyone knows of a place that makes a pizza that's not on fluffy bread or rubbery cracker stuff, please steer me in that direction.

We've been here for 3 months and I'm loving it EXCEPT for the pizza. and ice cream!

I'm not from Jackson but I'm pretty familiar with the area. There aren't any mom and pop pizza restaurants that are worth mentioning. I do know of a couple of good pizza restaurants in west KY if you are really interested.

Are you from NY? I'm guessing that there aren't many good BBQ restaurants up there. Pizza or BBQ every region excels at something and lacks something else.

Im told for pizza we have to try Bessos (brick oven and italian family run) their gelato gets good revews to but the rest of the menu is aparently "so-so"

icky brick oven - they bake it in a regular pizza oven until 2 min before done, then toss it onto hot charcoal - yes, right on the charcoal - so when it's ready, you get to eat charcoal dust on your pizza crust.

Besides, it's always that thick crust. Maybe we'll try their gelato. I guess I really am going to be looking at buying a pizza oven.

yup, we are - well, originally from Jersey where the best pizza comes from. Actually, there is an incredible BBQ place in both Manhattan and Jersey -- famous Dave's. It's the best I've ever had. But no, we haven't tried Memphis BBQ yet.

NY Annie: If you're up for the drive there are some good places in west KY. Tom's Pizza in Murray is good. My wife went to college at Murray State and she knows about other good pizza places there but I can't remember them offhand. Also, there's a pretty good pizza place in downtown Paducah whose name I can't think of - but I think they do the brick oven thing.

You willing to drive 70 miles to Memphis for pizza? Maybe for a special date night with Hubby? I like Old Venice a lot. They're a small local chain from Oxford, MS. Maybe you could convince them to open a Jackson location. Sounds like they'd do well there. :-)

Famous Daves is good for NY/NJ, but it isn't even close to being real BBQ.

Does Picasso Bistro suck? It gets decent Yelp reviews from visitors, but it's non-traditional toppings kind of pizza, if that's not your thing.

Germantown Commissary would be the furthest east of the good bbq places in Shelby County, I would think? I haven't heard of any place in Cordova off of I-40.
