PUTNAM -- It all sounded too good to be true -- that Gov. Bredesen had arranged to pay everyone's electric bill for last month.

And indeed it was not true.

But people wanted to believe it, and so that rumor raced like wildfire through Putnam County this week.

Welcome to the Herald-Citizen Web Page!!

Darn! Well, at least Bill Gates is sending me that $10,000 for forwarding his test e-mail to everyone I know.

I don’t get it. Why would anyone be satisfied with a windfall of one month electric bill or a trifling amount of $10,000 from Bill?

I am splitting $20,000,000 from Nigeria from a former government official who is trying to move this money. All I had to do is give him my Bank account number and pay him $10,000 for transfer fee. I am waiting patiently for my 50%.

Why do people fall for these things?

What about Mary Winkler, who fell for the Nigerian scam, and then, in a panic, shot and killed her husband?

omg I have to google the winkler thing. Did she think the nigerian mafia was after her? good grief!

Okay, I deleted my lol...it's not nice to laugh about this sort of thing...but I mean, really--

The nigerian scam has been around for decades; I remember getting the letters by mail, then by fax, and now still by email.

Yep. I don't think gullible Oprah even bought her story.

Still, she walked.

Don't you wish in a case like hers the truth would finally come out? Who can really figure out what was going through the women's head?

It's also amazing that the electric bill windfall ever was believed and gained so much momentum. There are lots of gullible people in the world. P.T. Barnum: "There's a fool born every minute." Now, I believe it.

I got that email, emailed them back and declined their offer stating I was afraid it would put me in a higher tax bracket...so they tried a differant approach....lol
