I also forgot to add that Jackson no longer has a CSA, because Humboldt/Gibson County lost it's Micropolitan status. It was late, I was tired.

I have been wondering how long it would take to add Dalton, GA to Chattanooga. It's literally a 25 minute drive from downtown Chattanooga, yet they have left it out for years, makes no sense when other CSA's include areas 50-60 miles from the central city.

Well, they're based on commuting patterns. I think the methodology is a little bit funny. For instance, like you say, Dalton is close to Chattanooga...Clarksville is not too far from Nashville (about 45 minutes), and there is quite a bit of interaction between the cities...just not quite as much in terms of employment. But we add Lawrenceburg, which is easily an hour with no traffic from downtown Nashville. Why? My guess is because Lawrenceburg interacts a bit with Maury County, which we just added. Maury County is in our metro because of Spring Hill, not Columbia. It's really more of two distinct areas that happen to overlap.

If we could pick and choose, I'd rather Nashville's be just the old 8 county metro area (the ring counties + Dickson), and Maury and Montgomery. But we can't pick and choose.

I will be interested to see what the maps look like with the new definitions. Some of these areas are going to be pretty strange looking.

Who is "they" and what's the purpose?

The Census Statistical Areas are the "they." They are based on commuting patterns. I'm not sure if there is a singular purpose...but it's a way of defining which cities and towns interact with other cities. It does have an effect on Federal spending, too, I believe.

The Tri-Cities have more people than I thought, but there's nothing there of note.

Well, the Tri Cities do have a lot of people, but as the name suggests, the population is mainly spread out between three small cities/large towns. No, it doesn't function like an area with a single city and that population (say, like Mobile, AL).
