they can bite UNDER water, but cannot bite while swimming surface form what i was told by some professional snake folks...so yes your at risk if you dont see it....

i complelty agree we cannot spend our lives being afraid of them, anymore than they should spend their lives fearing humans, a little bit of comon sense goes along way as well as understanding that most of these snakes are also present in MANY other areas of the country (heck we had them al in CT but you ust didnt hear about them)
