If I could move to anywhere in Washington State I would move to the North Cascades area, in Twisp or Winthrop.

Have you considered Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine? They have both the water and the snow sports you're interested in.

I do think West Virginia is a good consideration.

In North Carolina there are a few ski resorts. Cataloochee is close to the smokies, not too far from Tennessee. Has a pretty decent elevation gain, unlike the ski resort in Gatlinburg.

You might also consider the Boone, NC area. Boone is the highest town in elevation of its size on the east coast.

The Chattooga River on the NC/SC border is amazing for kayaking. You could consider living in Clayton GA near there... it is close to Sapphire Ski Resort.

I thought I'd heard that Greenville SC had gotten an international airport to serve the executives at BMW.

Maybe for their private jets, but not for commercial service. The only airports around here with commercial, non-stop flights to Europe are Atlanta and Charlotte.
