We're coming from Maryland, and in an attempt to cut out driving time, I'm contemplating cutting Memphis from out trip. Original plan was Memphis, then Nashville, then Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. Chattanooga has been recommended but some, but others have told me not to waste my time there. The main draw toward Memphis was blues music. I'm hearing a lot of bad things about the area nowadays though regarding crime too... that it's losing its appeal. Can I find any semblance of blues in Nashville, Chattanooga, or Gatlinburg?

Not the real deal.

I will say this: Nashville does have Stacy Mitchhart, who is a phenomenal blues performer at Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar.

It's really the only place I can think of, though.

Sassy Anne's in Knoxville calls itself a blues bar but its offerings may vary. Knoxville has a good music scene and you can check the listings at metropulse.com to see if blues acts will be playing.

Sometimes there are blues cruises on the riverboat.

There's also Brackins blues club in nearby Maryville.

But it ain't Memphis.

Although I love Knoxville, you can probably stay in your home city and see about the same kind of blues offerings as we have here. You can come here to hear Americana, visit WDVX or groove to some roots rock ala The Dirty Guv'nahs. But blues? Nah. And Sassy Ann's is really just a dance club.

Let me ask you something. With the Blues where are you really coming from? That would help on advising. IF you're mainly interested in checking out a night spot of two that happens to have Blues or R&B is one thing. You can find those in many cities. But, IF you have the time for it and are REAL serious on the subject and want to really explore the true essence of it and get a feel for where and how it came about and see the more historical beginnings, then THAT is a whole other thing.

If you are fairly serious about it, I believe that almost requires a trip to Memphis. The crime there is not THAT bad to prevent you from making Memphis and the Delta (which is the real name of the game in Blues) the center pieces of a single trip. In other words I'd skip those other TN cities in order to have a concentrated venture on the subject.

In Memphis, there are a number of Blues oriented attractions which are too well known to recite here.

What is not so well known is what you'll find in this neat website - Moorhead, MS

Those folks built their road trip around a whole quest into exploring Blues mythology and origins. I would just work my way slowly thru the site and the different legendary spots on the tour like Highway 61, Greenwood, Clarksdale, Tunica, Moorhead, Helena and Greenville (I've added a couple they didn't mention). If when finished you've got a firm grasp on the deeper meanings of where "The Southern Cross The Yellow Dog", and you understand the phrase "The Mississippi Delta begins in the lobby of The Peabody Hotel and ends on Catfish Row in Vicksburg", then you're most of the way home...

Oh, and for another trip, NOLA and the Vieux Carré and highly recommended to complete the learning experience.

And a second btw, the most cost effective way from afar to deal with this is listening on the net to WEVL's shows featuring the Blues - http://wevl.org/webcast.php.

Thanks. We're coming from Maryland... a town that has pretty much nothing to offer the world and no semblance of nightlife or culture AT ALL. Our temporary home for a few months till we're back in a city somewhere like we prefer.

If crime is what your worried about, most blues bars are going to be in the downtown area. Downtown Memphis is very safe. But I would also suggest going to Clarksdale as well.

Welcome to the Mississippi Delta! Memphis has a very soulful feel. It's live!
