If I never get to heaven, at least I know what ‘streets of gold’ must be like already.

There used to be the most beautiful street in McMinnville when I was young. North Chancery Street was lined on both sides with big gorgeous maple trees. In the summer their dense shade made it one of the most pleasant streets in town to walk. But in the autumn, their beauty would be simply breathtaking! Historic old homes nestled under the arms of the trees, while school kids like me walked the cracked sidewalks and shuffled through the golden leaves. I remember looking up into the sunlight coming through the thinning leaves and wondering if there could be anything anywhere that could top this color. I hope it isn’t sacrilegious to compare it to heaven, but to me that was a taste of it at least.

Now progress has widened the street, cutting most of the old maple trees… tearing up the sidewalks that we used to walk after school…. Shortening the lawns of the homes along the way…. And rezoning has changed it from a residential to a commercial area… Signs and parking areas have ‘uglified’ the once stately and quiet homes.

As Robert Frost said, “Nothing gold can stay.”

Except in my memory…. Where I was blessed to walk those streets of gold!
