Not sure of the cost but i just read an article that those who are selling hay in East TN are now only selling to their regular customers IF they have any to sell. The property i bought in March is on a very large old farm land that was recently subdivided and our nearby neighbors asked to hay it for us (since it was required to do anyways) as well as many of the other lots for free because they have horses. But, they said normally they can Hay 3 or 4 times a year and this year they've only been out to do it one time. It's just been so dry in East TN this year. Just finding someone who sells hay is probably going to be a problem.

We're in Van Buren / Warren county - right on the county line. We've seen it as high as $145 for a ruond bale, as low as $90. Which really isn't low, it's crazy high, but right now that's about the best price I've seen. And then you have to decide what kind you want. The $90 bale isn't quite the quality of the $145. The Co-Ops have been bringing it in from Texas and other states by the tractor trailer load. Very expensive........

I got mine before the drought set in good for 2.50 a bale. I see it now for 4-6. Ive seen round bales 65$. When I got my first horse about 1991, I paid $0.90 per bale picked up in the field. I sure hope prices go down next season.

I bet it's not just the drought but rising gasoline prices, too, to move the hay to where it's needed that's driving up the price.

We brought hay down to our daughter from Ohio...got it for $2.50 a bale here for good quality horse hay. We've seen it going for anywhere from $7 to $10 a square bale in the Tri-Cities area.

Locally, gas prices dont matter much. I usually always picked up hay in the field. The last I bought was about 1 mile from where my horses were. The man is storing it in his barn at no charge now and I just pick it up as needed. The farm where I was boarding was sold and I had to move and didnt have enough storage at the new place.

I've heard that animal rights activists are trying to prohibit the use of round hay bales. They say the animals aren't getting a square meal.
