I think there are some tricks in the caring of a log home. We built our log home with wrap around deck with overhang. This will keep the logs away from sun, rain etc.
It helps on the up keep of the home. Sure there is work, but the return is greater I think. So far so good, some things need to be done, like gutters that have not been done but all in due time.

Would love to know what the Spencer area is like. We are looking to move from Northern Michigan and I LOVE your home. Exactly the type of thing we'd like to have and we'd be willing to rent until our home could be built (or start while we are waiting for our current home to sell), but my husband needs to find a job. He is the Director of Telecom for a phone company about 40 miles from where we currently reside. We don't know much about TN except you can get a lot of house for your money (at least that was the case 7 yrs ago when we were moving up to MI and read through real estate mags in restaurants on the way up). I grew up in the same town we now reside and lived in Florida for 12 yrs after college and then became disabled (and I couldn't stand FL--WAY too hot for me), but I met the man of my dreams there and he lived all but 3 yrs of his life in FL. As you can imagine, getting use to living in the snow belt hasn't been easy for him, which is why we are moving. We want the modern city life conveniences, yet the beauty of nature with little to no snow (his wish, not mine)--I know, we are looking for Lala land, but it must exist. We figured TN would be a good place to start the search. His skills are worth a lot of money and he's being underpaid by at least $40K/year, but is VERY well paid for Northern Michigan and we need to be in a place that he can earn what he's worth and I can have the beauty of nature that I truly need to exist since becoming disabled. We have 2 large Sable Collies and they need space to run and have fun, so can anyone out there help us?

Generally speaking, housing MAY be more expensive here, than where you moving from. Things have changed a lot in seven years.

Most importantly, you may think that your husband is underpaid now, but I bet he'll be even more underpaid here.

The Midwest has one of the best bangs for the buck, right now, IF you can find a job. My husband's co-worker just moved to Indiana. The housing is cheaper and the pay is better.

My husband is originally from Chicago. Believe me, we bat the idea around a lot.

Do a search for posts about Spencer in this forum. It's in a beautiful area, but there is almost nothing there. I think the town has one or two restaurants, one small grocery store, and that's pretty much it. There are two schools for the entire county; the high school is so small that they don't even field a football team (which is unheard of in Tennessee). Land in Spencer is cheap, and it's cheap for a reason. It might be a nice place to retire, but I can't imagine moving there and expecting to start a new life with the hope of finding a new job.

I agree with JMT if you retire this might be the place. If you need to work, set yourself up before you go there. Great area, nice and peaceful.

Van Buren's geography is just majestic!! I have a family history there, so I can't visit without remembering all the old folks and how in depression times they would walk up and down Spencer Mountain to go to work.
