I dont think there are any dirt roads left in TN. TDOTS goal is to leave no road unpaved. They may have changed the law since, but I remember the cops using chains cause they used to come get mom when whe had a bad snow so she could open the restaraunt.

Iv not heard of anyone needing chains lately as the winters have been mild. I was only there during a snow once and didnt need chains, the roads were fairly cleared off, but it is steep and windy up there and it is better to be prepared for the worst. I dont think anyone would ticket you for using chains in ice and snow conditions.

Did you ask the resort where you might rent tire chains? I would think if all the resorts are recommending them, someone there could make some $$ renting chains. I can do some checking locally and see if anyone sells them.

Well... I will wait like you said most probably.... I did not know that Sears would sell them....
The Sears locations that have an automotive shop probably would. Or any tire store.

Again, I'd sure insist on a front-wheel drive vehicle. Most cars are FWD these days anyway.

They make nylon chains (almost like straps), in additional to the metal ones. I'm not all that familiar with the nylon ones.

Then again, this is not Alaska or even upstate NY. Tire chains are not normal here, even in the Smokeys.
mbmouse, you may be thinking of studded tires, which cannot be used on TN highways. Tire chains, OTOH, are permissible on all TN roads when conditions warrant. During inclement conditions on mountain roads in some places like the Smokies, tire chains are actually required unless you have a 4WD vehicle.

imailin, it is impossible to know whether you'll need tire chains or not. I'd advise keeping an eye on Gatlinburg weather up until you depart. If it looks like there may be snowy or icy conditions, call the resort and confirm that chains will be necessary. If so, call a local Wal-Mart and/or Advance Auto Parts to check on availablity & pricing; both have stores in Pigeon Forge & Sevierville.

another thought, call an over the road trucking company and inquire if they ever use/need them in TN

Some have tire chains attatched to their rigs (I'm guessing they need/use them primarily out West.

My advice is , at a minimum, a front wheel drive car. I feel if weather dictates the need for tire chains they should not be on the road unless it is an emergency.

I doubt the car rental company would allow you to put tirechains on. If they are not put on properly and come apart, they will do damage to the vehicle.
I seriously doubt one can rent tire chains. Drive slowly and do not slam on the brakes and you should be fine.
