If you know where Nashville is on the map of Tennessee. You might be able to tell that Nashville is either totally in the tornado alley or really close to it. It looks to me like it is in the tornado alley area.

Former Oregonian here with deep Oregon family roots...(However, I was downwind of St. Helens' big blow--unforgettable--two days of night.)

There really isn't an area around Nashville within commuting distance that's any more or less likely to be hit.

Many newer homes come with shelters (many don't) and the cost of aftermarket shelters seem to continue to drop in cost--relatively.

Most communities in Middle TN do have tornado sirens, but your best investment will be in a weather radio with battery back-up.

After no time living down here, you, too, will be a doppler radar expert!

Good luck with the move.

Thanks Skinem! I appreciate the tips. I was noticing not many houses have basements...but read that's better to be in an interior room on the first floor anyways....

My mind still thinks a basement would be better....you know, underground, under concrete. Just saying.

Ours is in our basement. Most are in basements, or in the ground.

Most homes here don't have basements due to a variety of factors--limestone, groundwater close to the surface, 50+ inches of rain a year...basements are tough to keep dry here, although many of my west/wet-side Oregon relatives had them...
