Hello everyone,

I am moving to TN from PA in about a year and a half and I wanted to know the best area of the state for jobs. I am an occupational therapist and my husband is a cop. Is there a better or best part of the state for jobs? Also, which part of the state has the best climate? From my research, it seems that middle TN to western TN have comparable climate with storms and temperature wise. Overall, my husband and I are looking for mild weather, low cost of living, and FRIENDLY people. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I'm sure you have done your research, but make sure your husband will not lose his pension with the police department he currently works for if he leaves the job. Not a big deal if he's been on the job a year or two, but quite a significant retirement loss if he has been on the force for 10-15 years already.

Yeah, he's only been there for 3 years. Good point though!

In general, the best area of the state for jobs is going to be the Nashville metro because of the recent growth and the fact that it's the capital and largest city, trailed by Knoxville, with Memphis and Chattanooga picking up the rear for the larger cities. The smaller cities and rural areas are generally in pretty bad economic shape.

The state tends to get warmer and flatter as you go from east to west.

And I'll add that weather is going to be an improvement no matter where you go in Tennessee. More severe weather tends to be in the western part of the state, then Middle, then East. Of course, as I'm sure you know, bad weather happens everywhere, including PA. Northeastern Tenn., places such as Bristol, Kingsport, will be closer to the weather that you have now, but then again, not really. Like I said, anything around here will be an improvement.

I'd start inquiring with local municipalities, (Knoxville has city and county police forces, if that helps) to see if there are openings.

The great state of Tenn. is lousy with friendly people. I'm from the northeast myself. Be prepared to be chatted up in grocery stores, banks, anywhere. I've been out of the northeast for 18 years and I don't miss it. I almost had to move back a couple of weeks ago and I was extremely depressed about it.
