I find quite the opposite by using 840 when we go to Memphis. It adds 0 to 15 minutes to the trip and completely removes all the stress from the trip. We never go thru Nashville no matter what time of day we are traveling.

The problem with going thru Nashville using I 40 is it's just like a ski slalom. You are constantly having to cross several lanes of traffic because your next exit is opposite from the last one.

I've never traversed Nashville in that direction (I'm usually going north-south, not east-west), but RSMTN has a point. Unless I am in an extreme hurry, I'll almost always pick the less stressful route at the expense of a little time.

But with a pair of little ones in the vehicle... maybe fast=less stress in this situation.

Nashville traffic is a nightmare most anytime of day. Some worse that others but it's never good unless you're there around 3 - 5 in the morning. Then you need to watch for the drunken drivers and people shooting other people for no reason. With 6 instates enter downtown I-40 east and west, I-24 east and west and I-65 north and south. All 6 interstates converge into one single loop around and thru Nashville.
It's never a pleasant drive thru Nashville to or from anywhere. I always take the long way around Nashville when time permits.
