No vehicle inspection. Phones depend on location.

Like SMG said, depends on the area. I believe Nashville does have a car inspection but the rest of the state, none.
Phones, same thing. Some Embarq, some AT&T, some Verison. Can't think of others but some one else might chime in here.

Vehicle inspections are required for the following counties in Tennessee:
Davidson (Nashville)
Hamilton (Chattanooga)
Rutherford (Murfreesboro, Smyrna)
Sumner (Gallatin, Hendersonville)
Williamson (Brentwood, Franklin)
Wilson (Lebanon, Mount Juliet)

and the city of Memphis.

The "car inspections" here in the places JMT listed are for emissions only. I just had mine done last Friday. $9.

In Memphis it really is a car inspection. They inspect emissions but also things like headlights, brake lights, etc.

Invasive? I'm not sure I understand what's you're asking. Well, they don't search for drugs. ;-)
.
I've had one done ever since they started it back in the 80's. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, and sometimes 30 minutes, just according to how long the line is.
.
For a late model car they check the gas cap, check for a converter (I think), and hook up their computer to your car's emissions "computer". Once you're in the bay it takes just a couple of minutes. Most cars go through without any problem. For a car older than about '92, they test the emissions coming from the tailpipe rather than hooking up the car's internal computer, since those cars don't have one.

Cool CASH only -County emissions.

C.G.: Again if you move to one of SIX counties, check ahead. Hamilton for ex is CASH ONLY,$10 open Tues-SAT, need your Emission # BEFORE , ever going to Motor Vehicle for Lic PLATES.
Also every year before trying to re-new ONLINE.
The $10 / car still may be lower than other counties that have a "WHEEL TAX"? Overall Hamilton about $24 / yr. For very nice smooth roads. We just came back thru PA, like the mag report lists, your state , very heavy truck traffic / cold gets bumpy potholes.
