Relocating dilemma: pay reduction, out of state tuition, establishing residency, arts program

Facts:
Married 23yrs
Age 44
Son 22, Daughter 18
Originally from TN (Nashville)
Moved to CO (North of Denver) 11yrs ago
Daughter enrolled in Univ of CO Denver as of Spring 2008
DH has great job (which brought us out here) that he can now work from ANY location.
DH just rec'd 15% reduction in pay (many employees did as well)

Dilemma:
We would like to move back to TN where our families are currently. Cost of living in Tennessee (specifically Middle TN) is 15% less than here in CO. WE wanted to move back even before the reduction in pay.

The problem arises that when we move back we would then need to pay 'out of state' tuition. Maybe I am just ignorant to the cost/financing of college etc., but for CU Denver it is 4 times what the cost is for residents.

Of course emotionally, I am having hard time with leaving daughter behind. For some reason it feels totally different than had she left for college from us. (maybe why I cannot think toward my options clearly.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
Please feel free to ask questions if I have not provided enough info.

Thanks.
Anna

Is your daughter willing to relocate with you? If she is you can get in state tuition. How you ask. Well, during the year that you are establishing residency have your daughter enroll (you said middle TN right?) at MTSU and declare her major something that is not offered at the state university in CO. MTSU has a wonderful recording arts program, perhaps that could be the ticket? During the freshman year the students are taking a lot of basic courses that really will not affect her desired major. After the residency is established then your daughter can change her major. This is what a friend of mine (originally from TN but lives in Alabama) is doing. Her daughter is enrolled at MTSU in something in one of the recording industry majors that is not offered in Alabama.

Hope this helps and good luck with the move.

I just went through this very same thing. My daughter is 25 and there was no way she was moving here. She wanted to stay in Florida. She has her life there and was also born there. She loves it would not move. She goes to college there. I don't pay more because she is a resident of the state. There comes a time for us to let go. Does your daughter feel confident about staying in Denver? If she does, let her stay. It was hard for me and sometimes I still feel funny about it. She is my only child. She visited at Christmas, felt the cold and was happy to go back LOL! You have to look at it as it is nothing that can't be undone. She could always move here with you.

this may sound naive, but can't your daughter move off campus in CO and maintain her in-state tuition classification? that's what a lot of students did when I was in school. In other words...she establishes her own residence in CO.

SmkyMtnGal, unfortunately, no she does not want to move. She chose CU Denver due to the nursing program. She is 18 and all of her memories/friends are here. Thanks for the info, though!

Kim918, thanks for the understanding. It's so hard...
My DS has not lived away from home as yet, so was unsure if she can establish residency.

TriDad, hmmm...that's a good point.
In fact CU Denver campus does not have dorms at all. They do however have on campus housing that is not part of CU Denver. We were looking at getting her an apt at a student housing off campus that is cheaper than the on campus apt. I would if that would work to establish her residency.

Hmmm, if she is staying there then I would probably stay in the area (CO) a year or two longer and then consider moving. My son is a college freshman this year, 3 hours away, and while he certainly doesn't need us for day to day living there have been several weekends where he needed to come home (you know, the non verbalized "I need the home cooking and security of home" stuff). It's also been nice to meet him halfway for a meal. I don't know if he got more out of it or I did. It's nice to still be needed. Hugs to you, I feel your angst.

I totally understand your fears, believe me. I bought my daughter a new car before I left so I knew her transportation would be reliable and I did not have to worry about her getting stuck late at night or anything. I paid for an apartment in a first class neighborhood (gated) so I knew she would be safe. I did all I could, there was no talking her into to coming, just like your daughter. Is your daughter very social? If she is like mine, she has friends galore and does not want to leave her social circle. Your daughter will be fine. Experiencing life somewhat on their own is good for them. It helps them grow up. She could always change her mind later as I said before. Mine loves having her own place. She is paying all her own bills now and just loves the feeling of being independent. It will be okay Makeupfool. Things will work out for you.

consider buying a condo for her. A lot of parents of UT students do that. Could be cheaper than rent, particularly if she shares, and it maintains your residence in Colorado.
A lot of condos near big universities are being created for students. After they graduate the parents sell it or rent it out.
