There's a great little red climbing roses that a lot of people have here, but I can't think of the name of it offhand. It's been around for years.

I have a red knockout rose that I got 3 years ago and it's about 4 ft. high and 4 ft. wide. I got a pink one last year and its really growing to. They take care of themselves. Just give them a dose of epsom salt about once a month and they do great. I have several different roses but they are bad about getting black spot. I have the climbing mini-rose and it is covered with blooms in early summer with the first flush and then again in fall. In between there is always blooms just not as many.

That would be a little early here, bunky, for bare root. You are fortunate that you have the climate to do that.

Sure would like to see how they turn out for you. Fill us in, ok?

It's early for bare root here. Don't forget last year's Easter freeze.
My favorite nursery for annuals is Stanley's in South Knoxville (Henley Street/Chapman Highway across the Tennessee River, go straight about two miles, turn left at Ruby Tuesday's, right at the dead end, it's about a mile down on the right). They have an excellent selection and good prices. Don't know about their roses, I don't shop for those.
Some like Pope's Garden Center. I wasn't impressed. It's in South Knoxville and I had a heck of a time finding it.
Lowes, both the one in West Knoxville on North Peters and the one in Powell on Callahan Road have good selections of perennials and plants in general. Several of my gardenweb friends are happy with what they've gotten there.
Also, please join us at the Knoxville Spring Plant Swap on May 3. More info and directions here.
Knoxville Plant Swap
Great way to meet fellow gardeners, get lots of plants, including roses, and learn about what works here. Several Master Gardeners are part of the group.
A lot of Knox area gardeners are on Tennessee Garden Web.
Gardening in Tennessee - GardenWeb
There's someone in the Knoxville area that grows and informally sells the old roses. Several people on Gardenweb mentioned it. Ask there. I can't find the thread.
And do head down to the UT Gardens. They've got trials on all the time and loads of information.
Before you order anything from a catalog or on the internet, check them out at Garden Watchdog -- a Consumer Reports for nurseries.

Happy gardening!

Wow, knoxgarden, what great info-- thank you!!!

I will def put the plant swap on my calendar. Hopefully, by May, I'll have some plants. Everything's dead as a doornail now.

Bunky, you're making me homesick for L.A. The roses would be getting ready to bud.

SMG, you come on over and "prune" anytime you want to. You can deadhead and pick off the aphids while you're at it!

Tried to rep everybody, but I'm going to have to spread it around. Guess I haven't been spreading enough lately...

Smile We have a little of everything here, folks.

Thank you so much, knoxgarden. Great information for us, as always. What would we do without you?

Bunky, I have seen several pieces of your art and I think you should consider doing note cards. I would love to find some like your floral paintings!

SMG, what are we going to do with you? You do all know that SmokyMtnGal does a stand-up comedy act at 3 PM on Saturday at Tomato Head in Maryville, don't you? You have to catch her show!!!

(Hey, just kidding. Don't anybody drive to Maryville from West Palm or Johnson City for the show!! Just stick to the forum!)

Haha Gem! I could do a lot with knox's post regarding plant swapping here in Knoxville but I will be good tonight.

I have a girlfriend in Seattle going through master gardener classes right now and she said that they are tough.

And, I repped knoxgarden so she is over the 100 mark now! Woohoo!

Talking I know what havoc you are capable of stirring up with just one teeny, weeny twist of the words! Love it!

Yeah, I know, SMG. You could really do a whole bit on that, I have no doubt!!

I must have put knoxgarden at 100 then! Great minds reward great minds reward great minds...!

Congratulations, knox, you are now over 100!! Yippee!

I would imagine the master gardener's course is very tough. I know I can't plant petunias without checking my annual's books.
