As someone who has focused on these 2 cities for retirement I feel somewhat qualified to share my thoughts even thought I live in neither.

I liked JC a lot. Not at first, it really did have that rust belt look of a small industrial city. But it has improved dramatically and the biggest eyes sore, an abandoned mill in the center of town, has been purchased and is being cleaned up. Great access to the mountains, which also meant cooler summers, loved the feel of a college town. So we were all set on JC.

Until my wife had a serious medical issue up here in Maryland. That brought health care to the fore front of our requirements. And I have just heard way too many concerning stories about the health care in JC to consider it. So now we are off to Maryville in a month for our first visit. The pluses include access to Knoxville and all that offers, the negatives include the weather, it will be hotter and more humid than JC. Another negative is you view the mountains instead of actually being up against them.

The difference will be negligible.

Really? I read where it's a bit hotter and more humid in Maryville due to elevation.

Well, as someone who has actually lived in both areas, and still owns a house and property on Watauga Lake (with family living in both places) I feel qualified to answer. It depends on exactly where you are in each respective area.

And I'll chime in and say that how it 'feels' as far as comfort also depends on who you are, to me a 4-5 degree difference is huge. Other people are probably better at tolerating the difference.

Totally agree. I can attest to that in my own household! LOL

The local hospital in Maryville isn't going to be any better than Johnson City. It will be closer to the hospitals in Knoxville, though.

Maryville is almost as close to the mountains as Johnson City - there isn't really much of a difference on that front.

Yeah Knoxville for medical for sure. Glad to hear Maryville is that close to the mountains. Also surprised to hear the weather is the same as Tri Cities despite the elevation being lower but Beretta would know as she says.

I ended up in Blount Memorial once, as a result of an emergency situation. Friends of mine that are physicians at a large trauma center in Knoxville came to visit me while I was still in and had this to say: "So sorry you are here but at least what you had was cookie cutter straight out of the recipe book so they couldn't mess you up too bad". That should kind of tell the tale.

Yes this is very troubling. But let's say I live in Maryville and have an emergency. How do I get out of the local hospital and transferred to Knoxville once I am stabalized? How exactly do you go about doing that?
