Hello all. After looking at hundreds and hundreds of houses & places covering 3 states (Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina) online for the past 10 months, we have narrowed our "new home" area to either Johnson City (& surrounding areas) or Maryville (& surrounding areas).

As retirees, our "important factors" were temperature/climate, taxes, small town close to a large town/city (for cultural events), views, house prices. The tri-cities area and Maryville/Knoxville area seem to match up for us.

We are scheduled to be in Tennessee in a few weeks to go "house-hunting" in both areas. We have both kept up on reading opinions on individual places in this city-data forum and enjoyed the comments and the pics. It seems both of these "areas" have great aspects and maybe not-so-great aspects to them. We will be in TN for two weeks and will try to get a "feel" of both places, but I thought some of you might have great insight to offer that we may not notice in a mere two weeks....

My question, therefore, for those of you who are familiar with both areas...in your opinion, what are the pros and cons of both places and where would you prefer to live?

Thanks for your comments & opinions....

My only knowledge of Maryville is that I used to date a guy who lived there, so I can't help you with that part; however, I used to live in Kingsport and Bristol, TN and worked in Johnson City. It's a very nice area. I only moved away because I married a Kentucky boy. I liked living in Kingsport better than Bristol (too much traffic on Bristol Motor Speedway weekends). Johnson City is the bigger of the three in the Tri-cities area and has East Tennessee State University there. It has nice restaurants and a mall. We got snow, but not as much as people up north. I think its bigger than what I remember about Maryville.

Default Johnson City vs, Maryville

Why should I chose Johnson City over Maryville? Anyone got some good arguments?

Looks like you're medical. I don't know what Maryville's medical scene is like, but Johnson City's is very strong. Just today I talked to a lady whose husband moved up here from Florida to be an RN at JCMC.

Other than that, I would say that the places are very different and you'll have to come visit both. If you prefer living closer to Knoxville or need access to the Nashville airport, I'd say Maryville all the way.

Default Johnson City vs Maryville: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.....

Hi !

After reading and re-reading posts on both places, about 50 times [OK,OK, a slight exaggeration there ]
I finally just decided to come on back and ask for some help. For folks that live, or have lived, in either of these 2 cities. PLEASE give me your honest opinion on them, what you like, or dislike about them. If you've moved from either place, why? The similarities and differences about the two cities. BTW,is Maryville a rural area?

After re-reading posts, sometimes you can get a little crazy, and are left more confused then you were when you first began to read them.....or, maybe that's just me............
Thanks so much, once again, for your help.
