How long does it take to get license plates? Here in Texas, after you do the paperwork and pay the fees, it takes a few weeks before your plates are ready. When I lived in Arkansas and Utah, the plates were ready immediately and you walked out of the building with them in hand. How does Tennessee do it? Do you get them immediately or have to wait? If you have to wait, about how long does it take?

I searched for the answer to this but didn't come across anything. I'm sorry if this has been asked before.

I believe you walk out with them. Then you can renew through the mail or on-line or go back and pick up the sticker every year. Speaking of which, isn't it about time for new plates? I think I have at least 6 years of renewal stickers on the one I have now.

You pay, you play. Haha. You get them immediately unless you order specialty tags. After that you can renew by mail or in person (or I think online too, I get them and licenses mixed up).

Yes, walked out with the plates the same day. And the bonus was that the people at the county clerk office were efficient and pleasant (as were the people at the driver license office). Nice change from Florida

If you are buying a new or used car from a dealer then they give you a temporary plate and the new plate was mailed in about a week and a half.

IF you are changing the plate on a car you already have from one state to TN, then you just go to the office and they hand you a plate if you are getting a regular plate and you walk out with it. If you have a specialized plate request then you can not walk out with it. Make sure you bring the paperwork they need. You MUST change the title of the vehicle to register it in TN. And TN only will accept a hard copy of your old title. So if you are coming from a state that uses electronic title records, you will need to get a hard copy of that title to register your vehicle here.

Thank you everyone! You guys have all been very helpful. I'm researching a possible move to Nashville early next year and that was something I couldn't find online. Temp plates are fine but just something about them bugs me. I would so much rather just have plates. I don't know why Texas makes it so complicated. They do it with your driver's license too. You have to wait for that to be mailed to you in 3 or 4 weeks instead of them just handing it to you.

TN gives you a photo copy of your new drivers license as a temp and they mail one in about a week.

Hmm, I learned a few new things here that I hadn't given much thought to.

Thank you.
