We were reading that Tennessee is giving free community college to high school graduates. Does anyone know how this will be paid for? Will real estate taxes increase to cover this expense? Is this benefit for legal Tennessee residents only? What are the requirements to get this free education? Curious to know how this is going to be paid for. Looking forward to hearing more information about this issue. Thank you for any information.

Tennessee pays the tuition for the first two years of community college or vocational/trade school. It is paid through lottery money. You are responsible for books and other expenses. Good deal

They've been doing this for high school graduates since 2015. They are now offering the same to adults. There are a lot of people that buy lottery tickets, nice to see it go for something that will benefit those looking to move up. The state and its citizens eventually all benefit.

By the way, the lottery funds a lot of scholarship programs.

Does anybody know if my youngest son will qualify for this ? He was born and raised here in Tennessee and we moved away from 2013 ~2017 . We moved back and will have residency~12 months~ come August. My son graduated high school in Colorado , I don't know if that makes a difference?

Unfortunately I believe all the available programs are only for graduates of TN high schools. You should probably contact the financial aid office of the college that interest you to verify that though.

FYI: Tennessee does not have a durational component for establishing residency for in-state tuition.

In post three I wrote that they offer Tennessee Promise to adults now, you do not have to be a graduate of a Tennessee high school. However, you DO have to be a resident for one year and qualify as an independent student on the FAFSA.
