Vince may not have lived in this area long enough to be familiar with the "mountain wave" events that occasionally occur on the northwest side of the steep mountain terrain that runs along the Tenn and NC border. I wouldn't begin to claim that we see "a lot" of these but they can be quite destructive. Such an event was largely responsible for starting and spreading the great Gatlinburg fire a few years back (spreading embers from a ongoing fire near the mountain top and also pulling down arcing power lines into dry conditions within Gatlinburg). Some 3,000 structures were destroyed which is of biblical, or California, scale.

These wind events normally only affect a narrow area along the valley floor at the base of the mountain range. One such community that has been frequented by such is Camp Creek in Green County, Tennessee. The center of Chucky community is approximately five miles from Camp Creek directly away from the mountain. This may be far enough away to not feel the mountain wave effect at that center but the term Chucky in my experience often encompasses even the area around Camp Creek. Just be advised.

I do remember this but did not know about the “mountain wave”. I take it’s some sort of up or down draft due to the weather systems moving across the state and colliding with the mountains?

We were in Weaverville, NC at the time and do remember the fires racing across the mountains from Gatlinburg. Made it to Lake Lure I believe and possibly further. We’re in Erwin now along a ridge overlooking town and will say the wind roars through the valley here like no other. Sounds like a rocket launch at times.

We frequently get 50+ mph gusts here while the opposite ridgelines are perfectly calm. I personally love it but we had to have a few towering pines removed from over the house along with a few other questionable trees from around our property this summer due to the winds here.

Spend a good amount of time in the Chuckey area (was near there today at The Farm at Jackson Bridge) and have never really noticed much wind there, at least nothing more than anywhere else in the area.

Thanks for the info!

Is Camp Creek near Chuckey? I just saw 5 miles! I've talked to people that live in Chuckey and they say the wind isn't bad.

There’s an area to the west of Chuckey that we’ve fallen in love with, but will not let out exactly where it is as locals there want to keep it hush and unchanged as do we. We’re looking into buying some homesteading property there but will be keeping our home here in Erwin too as our location here can’t be beat.

Growing up we used to love Western North Carolina but feel lucky now to call this area home. To us ETN has a special quality to it that’s not found over the hill, and hope those considering coming here will love and respect the area as much as we do.

Camp Creek is southeast of Chuckey closer towards the mountains. I would not be overly concerned about winds in Chuckey. I would not even be overly concerned about the very rare tornado in Camp Creek either.

Straight line winds out in Camp Creek can be pretty damaging, especially around Shake Rag Road, Greystone Road, Rambo Road, and those areas. (I grew up in Horse Creek and Camp Creek - small town boy!)

Like someone else said, Chuckey is a very broad term geographically for the local area. Depending on the speaker, Chuckey can range anywhere from the 11-E out near Rheatown up and over to Highway 107 around the Washington County line. But in general that area is far enough away from the base of the mountains to not get wind that would be truly damaging.
