Hi everyone,
So I’ve been thinking about moving to Tennessee from Connecticut for awhile but am finishing up a job processes right now before I decide to move. I make about 51,000$ a year up here in CT, what is that down in Tennessee a year?

Matt

You will want to look at a salary wizard or salary comparison tool on the internet to assist you. We don't know your job or the location in which you are looking in TN. These types of tools have nice cost of living calculators also.

ETA: Just found your previous thread and have merged the two. Knowing your job helps and also you may still want to use the salary calc tools.

It will make a difference where you are looking in TN.
Here are a couple of the tools Beretta mentioned to help you get started on making your own comparisons.

Depending on where you are in CT, Nashville may be more expensive. Small towns and rural areas will be much cheaper. My guess is about $35k for “not Nashville.”

Default Looking for opinions and recommendations on moving down to TN

Good morning all,

So I have talked about this before on here in the past and now that the months are ticking down to my departure from CT I feel now is a good time to start talking to people again on here about a move down to Tennessee. I just turned 30 years old and am in the law enforcement field and have a girlfriend who is a nurse. I will be moving down before her. We are both huge outdoors lovers. For me, hiking, fishing, boating, and just being outside are what is big for me and after talking to alot of people on here it seems that eastern TN is where I want to end up. Eastern TN is still big though and I am not sure where to go work or live. I grew up in a very small town here in CT roughly 4000 people or so and I enjoy the small town feel. I would love to buy a lake house but not sure if going down with 45k will be enough to put a substantial down payment on one or not. Me and my girlfriend are going to be going down to TN in August for about 10 days to do some exploring, as well as hiking and white water rafting. Looking for recommendations as to what to check out while I am down there. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Matthew

I live in Southern Middle Tennessee, so not much help regarding East Tennessee

We are however, close to the foothills of the Cumberland Plateau.

My farrier is a serious Kayaker, which is not white water rafting. She lives further east and prefers to do her Kayaking in one of the Carolinas. It may be the same for white water rafting. I can ask her for details

She lives in Franklin County, TN which is home to Tim’s Ford Lake. Lots of outdoor activities, which fishing is very popular if you like to fish. The homes and cabins in that area range from blue collar affordable to you-need-to-hit-the-more-money-than-brains-lottery

That area would put you fairly close to Chattanooga. Your GF may have a more difficult time finding work than you, as we have experienced a lot of rural hospitals closing in the last few years.. It is a critical path issue when looking at counties to settle in and how far she is able to drive for employment that may not pay much of anything.

I’m not sure about law enforcement. IMHO you may want to live rural but work in a bigger population. Beware the Boss Hogg Mentality in some rural sheriff departments. I have been retired 17 years from OH/PA border, and did not live under a rock when I lived up there. Pay attention to your gut when you come down in August. Something that might be a consideration is a position with the THP but I don’t know how demanding they could get with transfers to other areas.

I love it down here. They will have to carry me off this hill, but I don’t have to work off this mini farm either. It’s not the same as needing full time employment and benefits. You may get sticker shock regarding pay rates (for both of you) between CT & TN

Best wishes and at the very least, have a great vacation while checking out the areas.

Check out the Cookeville area. An olympic kayaker fell in love with the area enough to move his entire operation to town where he now builds kayaks and tests them on local rivers. There are 1200 miles of lakeshore, a dozen state parks, and 100+ waterfalls within 40 minutes of town. It's a very popular area for outdoor lovers.

At 35,000 Cookeville is larger than your hometown but it's still a small town with a quaint downtown, leafy neighborhoods, and the advantages of living in a small town. Plus, the area has a lot of smaller towns that might interest you: Gainesboro, Livingston, Baxter, Sparta, each with its own charms. Cookeville is the hub of the region with a booming economy and lots of things most small towns don't have (NCAA sports, concerts, retail, museums, etc.). It's also got a large regional hospital and is the medical hub of the region with dozens of medical offices and clinics.

And, unlike most rural areas in Tennessee, the rural areas around Cookeville have lightning fast gigabit internet. I live 25 miles west of town in an area so rural that I'm 8 miles from the nearest gas station, but I have gigabit internet at my home.

Here are samples of fairly inexpensive lakefront houses that have recently sold in the area:

I am a little surprised by your comment about nursing positions. I look online and there are more nursing jobs down there than anything else. There is also a very large variety of law enforcement positions down there as well. Nurses surprisingly make more down in TN than in CT which i found very strange. I know the cost of living and the pay are much less down there but I dont make good money in CT either. To me happiness is worth more than good pay and benefits. I plan on going only for state and federal jobs so wont be moving until I have a job. Eastern TN is where I want to be because of the mountains, lakes, and warmer weather. My parents retired from CT and moved down to Crossville and they love it there, I think I love TN even more than them I just dont know the areas and it is a big state so it is hard for me to find an area where I actually want to move to down there.

To reiterate, there are many beautiful rural areas to reside in. My point was to be sure you settle in a comfortable driving proximity to a functioning hospital (or doctor’s office) that isn’t in the verge of closing
