Which city has more (and cheaper) flights to fly from?

We are exploring where to move to and this is a consideration aside from crime, affordability, and jobs (for the kid).

Thank you!

Nashville. And it's not even close. I see you're in Oregon. Nashville is the only airport in Tennessee to offer nonstop service to Portland, and it's on 2 different airlines: Southwest and Sun Country.

airport...airlines...destinations...2019 passengers
Nashville...21...92*...18.3 million
Knoxville...5...25...2.6 million
Chattanooga...4...9...1.1 million

*Nine of those are international destinations:
Calgary
Cancun (5 different airlines)
Grand Bahamas
London
Montego Bay
Montreal
Punta Cana
San Juan
Toronto (2 different airlines)

Nashville's one of the cheapest airports in the South to fly out of because they have numerous low cost air carriers.

We live 90 miles south of there and fly out of an expensive airport. It's because the government employees moving in and out of Huntsville that it's so expensive. The Feds are not bargain airfare shoppers.

We usually fly out of Nashville to the Northeast before transferring to European flights. We can get to the West Coast easily from there.

And sometimes out of Atlanta if going to the Caribbean.

American Airlines flights jetBlue flights Boutique Air flights

Many more flights are not on this list. Southwest is #1 carrier.

Mad Mom,

We live between Chattanooga and Knoxville. Lately Knoxville has had better fares but we have also found Chattanooga to have better fares in the past so we shop both locations before flying. Both airports are easy to get to and usually easy (not crowded) to fly out of.

Don't forget, if you are in Knoxville area, or Chattanooga, you will find MANY more flights into and out of Atlanta than you will BNA. Chattanooga is only 90 min from Atlanta. Knoxville is approximately the same distance from Atlanta as it is from NashVegas. Atlanta is, after all, the busiest airport in the world.

Yep, but you've got to get through Atlanta to get to Hartsfield-Jackson on the SW quadrant of the city. That's 260 miles and 3.5 hours drive as long as there are no traffic jams in Chattanooga (construction) or Atlanta (rush hour.)

BNA is just about 2.5 hours from Knoxville--depending on where you're starting from. I see Knoxville flyers just about every time we fly out of BNA.

I was reading today that a new Southwest Airline concourse has just opened up in Nashville.

Unfortunately, Nashville is the cheapest but I will pay extra to fly out of Knoxville because I don't want to drive 2-3.5 hours one way for a 2-4 hour flight. LOL.

When I lived in Knoxville I usually flew out of TYS but every once in a while it was so much cheaper to fly out of BNA (Nashville) that it was worth the drive. I know many families, in particular, who will drive to Nashville, as even a savings of just $100 per ticket can really add up for an entire family. But often the difference is much more than $100, especially for flights to the west coast. And since there are far more nonstop destinations out of BNA than TYS, the chances of having to change planes are much smaller, too.

I can see the value in this, but it does depend on a case-by-case basis. For me, when I fly to the west coast, it is usually to John Wayne or Sacramento. I cannot always find a straight shot, non-stop, reasonably priced alternative to flying out of Atlanta. Only sometimes I can find something out of Nashville that meets my convenience/cost/timing variables better than Atlanta. But certainly, when we fly up the eastern sea-board, or on rare occasions to the midwest, then yes- worth the drive to BNA if TYS does not offer or wants too much money.
