Hello! I’ve posted in a couple other forums but wanted to narrow down my search. I’m a 26 year old single female, registered nurse. I’m from PA but currently in San Diego while in the military. I will be getting out in under 2 years and am looking for a new place to locate. I’m down between north/east Texas and eastern Tennessee. I’ve gotten a lot of opinions on Nashville and the hustle and bustle/traffic/higher prices. I’ve heard good things about Knoxville. I’m looking to live in the country/rural community but obviously don’t want to travel hours to get to work(hospitals). Any good, safe, towns outside of Nashville or Knoxville that may be a good fit for a single young professional. I’d love to have a little bit of land as I ride horses(barrel racing) but obviously something I can afford on my own income.

Thanks in advance for everyone’s advice

I have been reading your posts for a while since you're from central TX and that's where I live and you moved to TN and I'm thinking about it. Anyway, I realize you didn't say anything about humidity in the posts below, but northeastern TN has got to be better than TX. My A/C went out Wednesday evening and is still out. The temperature today was 105 with a 112 heat index. I'm old and it's brutal.

Here are a few things you said about central Texas and I couldn't agree more:

"Mountain views and cooler weather were important to us."

"I am so glad to be away from the stifling heat of central Texas."

I’ve been in Southern Middle Tennessee 17 years. We have been getting “feels like” in the three digits the last few summers but NOTHING like that ^^^^^ Yet ——-

Middle Tennessee is the Basin, which is why we have so much allergy issues;one of my horses developed environmental allergies after we retired here. Maybe he would have anyway but he cost me a vet bill the first time, until I figured out how to feed him and treat him holistically — drugs made him a nutcase.

The Plateau probably has much more pleasant weather in terms of lower index but you get a little more winter up there

Hospital care is getting to be a big deal. A lot of rural hospitals have closed, so you have to be mindful of that, as anything can happen as we get older

You may want to look at N and E Knox County, a good portion of which is still kind of semi-rural. In adjacent counties, check out areas outside the city limits of Maryville, Lenoir City, Clinton, etc. Seymour also seems to fit what you describe.

Good advice; thank you. I do worry somewhat about medical and will definitely be mindful of that. As far as snow, I'm okay with that. I checked and they don't get much. So sorry about your horse and glad you figured it out the right way.

Yes, the Texas summers are brutal here. I moved to central Texas from southern CA 42 years ago and OMG! What was I thinking? Ugh!

True. If I choose to go out in high humidity I will still survive. In Texas I stayed inside. That year that had a 100+ degree for 100+ days was brutal.

I still love it here. The mountains are wonderful and I love having four seasons. So far the winters have not been too bad compared to years ago according to the old timers. BTW, it's important to make acquaintances with the old timers. They know much.

OMG! That summer was horrid and there was another in 1980 that was a killer, too.

Northeast TN looks very lovely and really, the weather seems to be okay compared to some places.

Blount County is in the eight hour driving range to Pittsburgh, PA, if that helps.

UT Knoxville is home to the veterinary school and the equine hospital.
