We are looking for an area to move to and purchase some land to hunt but I’m not sure where good deer hunting turkey hunting etc. is in Tennessee. Farm and/or timber, 50 to 150 acres. We would like to be somewhere in an area like Cookeville but don’t want to focus our search efforts until we know that there’s decent hunting. Also need to be close to a town or city with 20k people or more for work. Is cwd an issue in TN? Appreciate any advice. Didn’t find much searching the archives.

I live about 25 miles outside of Cookeville, and there's plenty of hunting around here. A fellow from England owns about 90 acres down the "holler" from me just so he can fly over here a couple of times a year to hunt. In the 25 miles between my house and Cookeville there are at least 4 businesses that process deer for hunters. Wild turkey come into my yard all the time.

CWD has so far been confined to West Tennessee.

Thanks for replying. Do you think I should assume that once you’re outside of the cities in large towns that most of Tennessee is decent deer hunting and turkey hunting?

Yes, that's probably the case. If the only thing you want is land where you can hunt, you can get that pretty much everywhere in Tennessee. But if you want lots of land out in the boonies but also things like reliable internet and proximity to solid health care, that's going to really limit you.

Web service is definitely needed, I’ll need to search for that info. Use it to make part of my wages. Thanks for the reminder

We bought nearly 50 acres outside the city limits of Elizabethton. No problem with internet and the local hospital is about 8 minutes away with the Johnson City hospitals about 20 minutes away. I've chased deer out of the yard and wild turkeys out of our long driveway. We don't hunt but we've had neighbors/friends come over and do some.

The area around Chattanooga is probably also worth a look although I don't know how far out into the countryside Chattanooga's superfast internet extends.

So yeah, if the OP wants lots of land out in the country for hunting and also close to medical care, a sizable town for jobs, and good health care, the options are fairly limited in Tennessee. Cookeville, Johnson City, and maybe Chattanooga. Because of CWD, West Tennessee should be avoided completely.

Eastern Sumner Co. could work, specifically the area between Bethpage & Westmoreland.
