If Davidson Did Lose Population will Nashville be like Metro Atlanta where All the Growth Happens in the Suburbs but the Central City Hardly Grows, Or Like Metro Houston where Both the Central City And Metro Grow

Maybe Shelby County Grew Faster or More than what was reported, maybe those in poverty didn't complete/care about the Census and thus where Undercounted

If Davidson County losing population becomes a trend and Shelby County keeps growing does that Mean Memphis would eventually become the Largest City again?,....Oh Lord Lol, hope not that would Reignite the Mem-Nash Rivalry all over again Where else it's kinda been dying down

Maybe Memphis didn't really lose population, nah ha that's probably wishful thinking
That's likely to happen soon anyway. The main issue is whether or not those undercounted will be captured in any subsequent estimates. The USCB is always formulating estimates, and if they incorporate these findings, then the estimates will reflect what is closer to reality.

There's no way Nashville lost popluation. Local news has mentioned that the mayor's office dropped the ball in getting the correct data to the USCB. There were 13,000 residential permits issued in Davidson County alone in 2020 and 15,000 issued in 2021. Even if half those MFH/SFH were/are built, that continues the trends we've seen of late of 9k-10k per year. The more likely estimate of Davidson's population is closer to 735-740,000 as of July 2022. COVID was a disaster for Metro Nashville, and the already-understaffed Metro Codes Department is so woefully behind in getting permits approved.

Using current Census definitions of the state's metropolitan and micropolitan areas--and those may modified later this year--here's the change from 2020 for the state's statistical areas. It's good to see so many rural areas start to show some population growth after so much stagnation the last 10 or so years. Knoxville is really picking up a lot of steam.

The top 5 cities by percentage are:

Clarksville 4.7%
Lewisburg 4.2%
Crossville 3.6%
Knoxville 3.1%
Cookeville 2.9%

Nashville is at 2.8%

I'd noticed Davidson county losing population to it's suburbs for years, looks like now it is headed for the exurbs.

Crossville was a surprise to me but it may have to do with boomers retiring. Being 4-5° cooler can't hurt.

Looking at this Census Map https://images.app.goo.gl/iCRyWZRyeGG6iJBj8

Tennessee is in a Excellent Healthy Condition, Nearly the Whole State is Green (Growing) in the Map, Even West Tennessee is mostly Green. Cookeville (Putnam County) Had Good Growth Too So Did the Tri Cities , Knoxville is picking up, Maybe in about a decade or two Memphis and Knoxville will go for the #2 Spot

Hamilton County/Chattanooga posted good Healthy numbers and the surrounding counties had moderate growth

Rutherford and Wilson Counties are absolute Juggernauts, Davidson lost population during the Pandemic but appears to be back on the Growth Track again. It Seems like Williamson County slowed down a little this year
+9076 between 2020 and 2021 but +4606 between 2021 and 2022 which is still good btw

DeSoto County Mississippi (fastest growing county in Mississippi) (Memphis Metro) Also Slowed down this year +3725 between 2020 and 2021 but +2681 between 2021 and 2022

Shelby County didn't do so good but in the midst of this something flew under the radar that many may not notice, 5 out of 9 of Memphis' Metro Counties Grew. That hasn't happened in quite some time, Most of the Time, Most of Memphis' Counties decline or maybe only 2 or 3 grow But this time 5 grew. (Tipton Marshall and Tate Usually Decline but all three grew this time) And For the First Time in a long time Memphis is Surrounded by (Green) Growing Counties instead of declining ones, Rather this is just A Blip or A Trend Time will tell. But That's just A Silver Lining in a otherwise Gloomy picture for Memphis

Metros may gain or Lose Counties this year as I Think This is around the Time the Census Redraws Metro Boundaries

Will Nashville and Clarksville become One Metro? Possibly not
Metropolitan Nashville already has about 15 or 14 Counties it will be interesting to see where it expands next, It Seems like Nashville is expanding in a mostly South and Easterly direction so maybe there

If The Census Adds more Counties to Knoxville Metro it may be knocking on the 1 Million threshold sooner than expected

Jackson TN the other Metro in West Tennessee may expand

It Would be interesting to See What Counties are Added to the Memphis Metro, I Hope not more Eastern Arkansas Counties because they never grow, and would be a drag, I Think Memphis has Expanded into Mississippi far enough, but Maybe Panola County since it's not too far from DeSoto County but that's a stretch since it's quite a ways from Memphis but then again Maury County was added to Metro Nashville and Panola County is about the same distance from Memphis, fast growing Lafayette county MS could be added but also a stretch since Lafayette does it's own thing (Oxford and Ole Miss) but it is Close to DeSoto County and the North Mississippi Growth Corridor. The Only Tennessee Counties I See added to Memphis Metro are Lauderdale County about 45 min North of Memphis but that's a stretch as that's probably too far, and the Most Interesting One of All, Blue Oval City, Haywood County. As Blue Oval City Nears Completion it would be interesting too see what Metro the Census Assigns it too, Memphis, Jackson (Which it is closer too) or Neither. Since the Census Redraws Metros I Think This year, and Blue Oval City isn't slated to be completed until 2025 it (Haywood County) may not be assigned to either Metro this go around.
Seems like I'm rambling so I'll digress here

https://images.app.goo.gl/iCRyWZRyeGG6iJBj8
Once Again looking at this map, it is sometimes taken for granted how dynamic Tennessee really is

Re-read my post. I posted the two-year change (2020-2022). You posted the one-year change (2021-2022). According to the numbers you posted, the population loss for the Memphis metro area actually accelerated in 2021-2022 (-3,182) from 2020-2021 (-2,655) for a total of -5,837 from 2020-2022.

I like this map which illustrates where the 2021-2022 growth has taken place. I wish I could make it larger to focus on just Tennessee. But it does show that Middle and East Tennessee are seeing lots of growth.
