The Census Bureau has released its population figures for the country's urban areas. The definition of what constitutes an urban area has changed since 2010. I'm not going to go into all that here, but if you're in to some light reading, have at it:
https://www.census.gov/programs-surv...ban-rural.html

In addition, the pandemic affected college towns in particular as thousands of college students went home once all classes went remote. That likely had a negative affect on places like Cookeville, Murfreesboro, and Johnson City whose populations have bounced back since the pandemic but aren't reflected in these figures. While the Census Bureau had universities submit dorm populations (even though the dorms were empty), this did not include off campus housing, where most students live.

Anyway, here are the urban areas in Tennessee with at least 15,000 people:
  1. Nashville...1,158,642
  2. Memphis...1,056,190
  3. Knoxville...597,257
  4. Chattanooga...398,569
  5. Clarksville...200,947
  6. Murfreesboro...177,313

  11. Bristol...70,638
  12. Morristown...66,539
  13. Spring Hill...60,309
  14. Cookeville...49,089
  15. Columbia...42,423
  16. Lebanon...36,678
  17. Sevierville...34,032

Only a matter of time before the Nashville urban area and Spring Hill/Columbia/Murfreesboro/Lebanon areas grow together into one 2 million agglomeration. Definitely by 2030.
