I was originally looking to move to Jonesboro, Arkansas, but then I saw that they pay property taxes for cars out there so I figured it would be best if I were to stay in Tennessee, and it turns out West Tennessee isn't seeing the same absurd growth that the rest of the state is facing. I would prefer to stay out of Memphis (although I wouldn't mind living in a really nice suburb as long as I don't have to go to Memphis) because of its issues so I've been looking at Martin and Jackson. Which of these cities would be better for me? I just want to be somewhere that isn't run-down and dangerous, has a healthy job market for advanced manufacturing (which is essentially building machinery and doing PLCs), and is close to a nice lake.

Don't live in TN (at least not yet), but have you considering Knoxville or Chattanooga? I looked around the Knoxville area for retirement and Oak Ridge has a lot of high tech going on. What about Huntsville AL or maybe Greenville/Spartanburg SC?

West TN does not have a healthy job market, outside of Memphis, at least for white collar professionals. There will be some medical, local government, education, etc., that is available about anywhere, but that’ll be about it.

You might find work at the new Ford factory.
If you need to move sooner what about living in TN near Huntsville AL.

Somewhere else. Have you considered Clarksville? It is a very healthy growing city with a rural setting. You would be close to the Cumberland River and Land Between the Lakes. Also, Clarksville has a plethora of jobs in advanced manufacturing. No state income tax and cheaper sales taxes just over the border in Kentucky.
